i asked one of my contractors and he said... the longer road isn’t a mistake, that it’s just discipline.

that engineers didn’t fail to see the shortcut, they rejected it cos of many reasons. the straight line looks efficient on paper but in reality it would be too steep, too dangerous and possibly too expensive to maintain so instead of forcing the terrain to obey them, they worked with it.

the fastest path is rarely the one that survives real conditions.

what looks like delay is cam be control and what looks like inefficiency is usually an actual risk management.
