Fatah has reportedly offered to restore the PFLP’s monthly financial allocations from the PLO’s Palestinian National Fund, which Mahmoud Abbas has repeatedly suspended during periods of political conflict with the Popular Front, including in 2016 and, on a continuous basis, from 2018 onward. Contemporary reporting attributed the cuts principally to the PFLP’s opposition to Abbas’s political leadership, including its criticism of his unilateral decision-making, negotiations with ‘Israel,’ PA–‘Israel’ security coordination, and failure to implement Palestinian Central Council decisions; its subsequent boycott of PLO Executive Committee meetings formed part of the later dispute.

At the time, Hamas publicly defended the PFLP against Abbas’s decision, praised the Front’s political positions, and characterized the withholding of its funds as political “blackmail,” while the PFLP increasingly stood alongside Hamas and other opposition forces in challenging Abbas’s policies. Fatah is now reportedly offering to restore these allocations in return for persuading the PFLP not to participate in the upcoming electoral coalition list.
