Kahneman and Tversky developed Prospect Theory, which shows that people behave not rationally, but systematically irrationally.
This theory earned Kahneman the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics.
According to Prospect Theory, people avoid risk when they stand to gain, but are inclined to take risks when they stand to lose.
In other words, according to this theory, which has been tested in numerous experiments, people make decisions based on fear of loss rather than logic in similar situations.
For this reason, most people choose the first option in the following statement. This is because a guaranteed gain is preferred over a larger but uncertain gain.
