There’s a certain kind of leftist/Marxist that has an almost theological faith in an object called “the masses” or “the people” but never interrogates this object or what it is supposed to be.
This goes back to some of the debates over agency vs. structure primarily
there are some worthwhile criticisms of sakai’s citational/methodological practices. but the uproar kills me bc reading some of the most rigorous historians of american labor in my late teens/early 20s led me to some of the same conclusions as sakai (before even reading him!) lol
