It’s not a suspension it’s a deferment. The diesel tax still exists; they’re just letting people delay paying it until after December 31, 2026. The executive order literally directs Treasury to “defer payment” of the diesel excise tax for a few months and then “explore avenues… to eliminate the obligation” later, which means tax forgiveness isn’t guaranteed and would require Congress anyway .

So what could possibly go wrong?

The bottom line: this doesn’t add a single gallon of diesel to the market. It doesn’t fix the supply problem. It just kicks the can down the road.

Diesel prices are projected to stay elevated well into 2027, so farmers and truckers will still be paying high prices and if Congress doesn’t pass forgiveness, they could also owe back taxes on top of it. Yikes.

And even if Congress does forgive the taxes? That just adds to the national debt.

We’re fighting a war that’s already straining the budget, draining the SPR, and driving up fuel costs. Policies like this don’t solve the underlying problem they just delay the pain and deepen the bill. At some point, we have to admit the obvious: this war is pushing the U.S. toward a fiscal cliff.
