We’ve got AI to detect cancer, drone delivery for biryani and apps to schedule your pet’s meditation session. But no clue how to build a decent drainage system. And this is the tech capital of the country. Who’s to blame and who’s accountable- I honestly don’t know.
Maybe it’s the system or it’s us. Maybe we were too busy building unicorns to notice the roads turning into rivers.

One thing is for sure that the ESOPs, villas, and startup exits won’t buy us a shortcut through this mess.

I am part of the tourism industry and have been vociferously saying this for the last 2+ years - we have become an overpriced dump of a destination.

Every single agent/partner of ours in the UK, EU, Australia & USA has the following questions - air quality, general hygiene & cleanliness, women's safety & incoherent chaotic internal logistics. We spend more time unsuccessfully answering these questions RATHER THAN actually selling our destination & products.

I haven't seen the reputation of India in tourism as low as this. There is no optimism and mystique anymore - every potential inbound visitor is seeing the news and reading on social media.

Domestic tourists are shunning India for abroad. Only the luxury segment in India is doing OK - somewhat for now. Middle segment is a bloodbath. Those of us who operate at a per person cost of under ₹10k daily have seen business vanish in the last 3 years. Majorly middle & upper middle class domestic tourists are put off by high domestic airfares and expensive local logistics.

I am at a loss why this crisis is not being taken seriously by policy makers. Inbound tourism numbers have not crossed 2019 numbers after the pandemic.

We have a reputation and price problem.

Everytime some post like the one by @deedydas goes around - we see it as some 'conspiracy against India, Hindus, blah blah, whataboutery etc.'

Tourism is the most stupid easy way to generate employment and goods & services tax for the government. Not a single youth I meet wants to take up a course in hotel management anymore - the sector has gained a reputation for being stagnant in India.

I feel gutted.
