READ: The student regents of UP and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) released a joint statement urging COMELEC to immediately disqualify the Duterte Youth party-list for red-tagging legitimate youth and student organizations, May 15.

“Red-tagging is a form of violence. It is a deliberate attempt to criminalize advocacy and discredit those who speak truth to power. It kills critical thought, endangers lives, and erodes our institutions. It has no place in our electoral system, much like the fake party-list groups that spearhead such a dangerous practice while claiming to represent the youth,” the statement reads.

The student regents stressed that the issue goes beyond Duterte Youth’s candidacy, calling for broader safeguards against state-sponsored harassment and repression targeting students, youth leaders, and activists.

On May 8, UP Student Regent Cheska Duran and PUP Student Regent Troy Cabangon, together with Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines, filed a formal disqualification petition before the COMELEC.

Duterte Youth ranked second in the May 12 polls and is set to secure three seats in the House of Representatives.

Binisita natin ang mga JODA sa Taft, at tinanong sila kung ano ang karanasan nila sa halalan.

Banggit sa atin, malala daw ang vote buying sa Maynila, lalo nung patapos na ang eleksyon. Sabi naman ng mga umuwi sa probinsiya, mas malala pa doon. Umaabot daw ng mahigit sampung libo ang bayaran ng boto!

Kuwento rin ng isang tsuper, anim lang ang binoto niyang senador, pero pito ang lumabas sa resibo. Ang iba naman, di binilang ang boto dahil sa overvoting.

Kaya nagpaliwanag tayo sa kanila ng ating panawagan para sa manual counting ng balota. Hindi natin ito inilalaban dahil may ilusyon pa tayong mananalo tayo, kundi dahil nakikibaka tayo para sa demokratikong karapatan ng bawat mamamayan.

Karapatan ng bawat mamamayan ang malinis at patas na halalan. Karapatan ng bawat mamamayan ang mabilang ang kanilang boto.

Ito ang ibig nating sabihin nang nangako tayong paglilingkuran ang sambayanan: na hindi sariling interes ang ating itinutulak, kundi ang interes ng lahat ng mamamayan.

Sa pagsasara ng eleksyon, panawagan natin na huwag nating hayaan na lang na mababoy ang ibig sabihin ng demokrasya. Panagutin natin ang MIRU, panagutin natin ang COMELEC, panagutin si Marcos Jr. at ang mga dayuhang ginagawang laruan at papet ang ating demokrasya.

At patuloy tayo, walang sawa, na lumaban para baguhin ang luma at bulok na sistema!
