To those who say "it's her choice" I used to say the same thing about my own Hijab.

I was covered head to toe. Even on the beach. Even with my male relatives. And when people challenged me, I said: this is my choice. You know why? Because the other option was burning in hell, hung by my hair for eternity. That's what they taught me since childhood.

Yes, let me repeat it for you to just understand about our version of “freedom of choice.” I grew up in an Islamist culture that gave me two options. Cover yourself and go to heaven. Or don't cover, and be hanged by your hair and burned in hell.

Like when someone puts a gun to your head and says "you can go left or right", technically, yes, that's a choice.

I picked heaven. I called it freedom. And I believed it, because that's what happens when fear is all you've ever known.

Lee Anderson speaking to Nick Ferrari on LBC from just outside a migrant camp between Dunkirk and Calais.

He and his team were on the beaches from around 4am looking for small boat crossings. They saw none. So they headed inland to the camp itself.

What they found, Lee said, was shocking. The conditions are appalling, people living in tents under the trees, rubbish everywhere, the smell is awful, and the sanitary situation is squalid. He didn’t hold back: “It’s absolutely appalling… it’s shocking that people are living like this.”

Then he asked the obvious question: why endure this when you could claim asylum in France, or in any of the six or seven safe countries you’ve already passed through to get here?

The reason they’re willing to live in these terrible conditions and refuse to claim asylum in the countries they transit is simple. They want to reach the UK. And they want to reach the UK because of what waits for them if they make it, free housing, money, phones, dental care, full access to the NHS, and more.

We have made it worth living like this and taking the risk of crossing the Channel on small boats. That’s why, Lee.

Last night it was announced that the killers of a police officer will walk free prematurely because prison capacity has dried up. Two absolutely glaring examples of calamitous state failure.
