There’s a popular view among evangelicals that being “not of this world” means being politically moderate, that serving Jesus will necessarily put us somewhere between left and right, supporting policies from both sides. This is nonsensical.

While claiming to be outside of America’s political binary, those who think this way actually still operate within it by claiming to be a little liberal and a little conservative. Usually people in this camp - what I call the “mushy middle” - are really just confused. They claim nuance when often they simply lack clarity and/or courage.

The truth is, Christians *should* live outside the left/right divide in America, failing to fall perfectly within party platforms, not because we’re in the middle, but because the Biblical position on most issues is far, far more “conservative” than where Republicans and most of the American right is today.

No Christian should find themselves “in the middle” of the party of unfettered baby murder and the party of moderate baby murder, the party of men in girls’ bathrooms and the party of doing little about it.
