Simon happily agreed to provide a reference for my PhD application to Birkbeck. Just a few months ago I told him that I had been offered the place on the programme. He was so delighted, encouraging and proud. I’m going to carry that with me throughout my entire project.

Haven’t been on twitter in quite a while but wanted to come on here to say I will really, really miss @ProfSJJames. What a lovely service today to celebrate a truly wonderful man ⭐️ the impact he’s had on my enthusiasm for literature is immense. I’m so glad to have known him.

So much love in the room. He was a community. A shelf of books that hold one another in place. May we all lead just good, creative, sociable, & caring lives.

His name will long be spoken, pints raised, plays acted, & words wrought in his memory.
