When I was in college, a fraternity brother of mine had grown up in Salem Massachusetts. I was intrigued, and did a lot of research into the whole witchcraft hysteria that swept that Puritan enclave centuries before.

Indeed it turned out "hysteria" was the key word. I found it difficult to believe that a coterie of hysterical teenage girls had so easily destroyed so many innocent lives, both literally and figuratively. Now today, however, as I watch in amazement as the alphabet/trans/pronoun hysteria grips another ill-informed generation, I'm reminded once again how easy it is to lose an entire civilization to mass madness.
