AI has the potential to be a major benefit or major detriment to humanity. It is still in its early formation, which is why @NYCCouncil is breaking ground to have an all member hearing on this issue. And why @SpeakerMenin, a former regulatory atty, is leading the charge to ensure the roll out of AI is done in an appropriate manner. Stay tuned!
A week from today, the Council is holding a major hearing on artificial intelligence to examine the risks facing New Yorkers and review our first-in-the-nation legislation we can pass right here to protect the public.
Today, I am announcing that @OpenAI, @AnthropicAI, @Google, and @Meta have all agreed to testify before us.
As of today, only Elon Musk’s @SpaceXAI has not responded. As such, the Council has issued a subpoena compelling them to testify.
If your home, apartment or business was damaged from the Nor'easter, report it at https://t.co/OkEi7DnmaJ or call 212-615-8329. Every report shows where the storm hit and helps with future allocation of resources. It is also important to contact 311 to report downed trees or request city services. A damage report and a 311 request do different jobs, so please do both. Those in @NYCCouncil District 29, can also contact my office at 718-544-8800 or [email protected]
New York, thank you for staying safe this weekend. The nor'easter is expected to weaken now but continue to bring minor impacts to New York City through Monday. Jamaica Bay reached moderate coastal flood levels this morning, crews are working through more than 1,008 downed tree reports across the five boroughs, and power outages have dropped from about 2,300 customers this morning to about 230.
NYC Emergency Management has coordinated the response with City and State partners since before the storm arrived, and that work continues through recovery. The Downed Tree Task Force remains active into Monday, NYC Parks crews are working 12-hour shifts for a fourth straight day, FDNY remains at an enhanced posture in the Rockaways and Howard Beach, and the Flash Flood Emergency Plan stays active while downpours are possible tonight.
Now we need your help. If your home, apartment or business was damaged, report it at https://t.co/kqwS0U0sTr or call 212-615-8329. Every report shows us where the storm hit and helps make the strongest possible case for the support our neighbors need. A damage report and a 311 request do different jobs, so please do both.
The forecast: 🌧️ Bands of moderate to heavy rain continue tonight at a quarter to half an inch per hour, with localized bursts of up to 1 inch per hour. Expect 0.85 to 1.25 inches through Monday, with up to 2 inches possible where downpours repeat. Minor flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas is possible, and isolated flash flooding can't be ruled out. 🌊 Coastal Flood Advisories are in effect for tonight's and Monday morning's high tides, with 1 to 1.5 feet of water above ground in vulnerable coastal areas. 💨 Gusts of 25 to 30 mph tonight, with a few gusts to 35 mph, easing Monday. 🏖️ A Rip Current Statement and High Surf Advisory are in effect for Brooklyn and southern Queens until 8 p.m., and dangerous rip currents continue through Monday. Dune erosion and beach flooding are possible through Monday morning's high tide. ☔ Showers Monday, ending Monday night.
What to do: 🏠 If you live in a basement, be ready to move to a higher floor if heavy rain begins. Never stay in or re-enter a flooded basement. 🚗 Never walk or drive through floodwater, including flooded roads, underpasses and subway stations. Turn Around, Don't Drown. 🌊 Stay out of the water. City beaches are closed to swimming for the season, and lifeguards are not on duty. 🌳 Stay away from downed trees and power lines. Report fallen trees to 311, and call 911 for downed wires or if a tree endangers people. ⚡ Report outages to Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED, or to PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0075 in the Rockaways. 📸 Take photos of damage before you clean up, and keep your receipts. 🤝 Check on older adults, people with disabilities and neighbors in basement or low-lying homes.

With a nor’easter 💨🌊en route, now is the time to help keep your neighborhood’s catch basins clear and reduce the risk of flooding.
SWIPE TO LEARN HOW TO CLEAR YOUR CATCH BASIN! 🌧️
Catch basins, commonly known as storm drains or sewer grates, are located along street and highway curbs. They collect stormwater and help prevent flooding. Before and during heavy rain, clear leaves, litter, and other debris from nearby catch basins.

🍝 A Kew Gardens favorite since 1991: @Lynn4NYC picks Spolini’s for pasta and meatballs. District 29 is home to 310 restaurants and bars, employing 2,253 people and supporting $73.2M in wages. https://t.co/9C5d9cuMJf
NYC CM @Lynn4NYC says that we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg with Medicaid cuts. Children are already losing coverage, hospitals are losing funding, and the City Council is committed to finding ways to support our residents.
Individuals living with severe mental illness often require specialized inpatient services to get the care they need. Today’s announcement of a $25.6 million @NYCCouncil investment in Bellevue Hospital’s inpatient psychiatric services represents a significant commitment to expanding access to high-quality mental health care for New Yorkers. Thank you to @SpeakerMenin and @vmmaloney for their leadership in making mental health services a priority.

The @aceprogramsny team was out in #ForestHills, working hard to sweep up litter and keep the area looking its best. This year, I have given extra funding for ACE to keep our streets clean.
ACE is an amazing program that provides jobs to New Yorkers in need, while helping to keep our neighborhoods clean.
On Tuesday, September 29, please join me, @SpeakerMenin, and many of my @NYCCouncil colleagues for our #Dashain celebration hosted by @NYCCouncil at City Hall. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.
Fall officially begins tonight at 8:05 p.m. ET.
The Fall Equinox marks the start of astronomical fall in the Northern Hemisphere. Around this time of year, daylight and nighttime are nearly equal.
From here, the days keep getting shorter until the Winter Solstice on December 21, with cooler temperatures and changing leaves following close behind.
Fall also brings its own hazards to New York City.
Atlantic hurricane season continues through November 30. Nor’easters become more common as the season progresses. Fallen leaves can clog catch basins and worsen street flooding during heavy rain.
Daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 1, bringing earlier sunsets, and New York City’s heat season begins October 1. During heat season, building owners must keep apartments at 68 degrees or warmer from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. whenever it's below 55 degrees outside, and at 62 degrees or warmer overnight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., no matter the outdoor temperature.

As co-chair of @JewishCaucusNYC I echo the sentiments of @SpeakerMenin, the first Jewish Speaker of @NYCCouncil, as we approach the solemn Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur this evening.
Today, I was honored to co-name 101st Avenue and 130 street as New Haven Ministries Way, to celebrate this neighborhood faith-based fixture in #RichmondHill. New Haven Ministries has dedicated 28 years of service to the community, with programs for youth and older adults, and a food pantry for those in need, and will now have their legacy permanently enshrined as part of NYC history.
Our office will be closed on Monday,September 21, in observance of the Jewish Holiday, Yom Kippur. We will re-open on Tuesday, September 22. For any issues, please leave a message at 718-544-8800 or an email at [email protected]
