I had a conversation with a friend who voted for Trump, which I accidentally recorded.

It started normally.

It did not end normally.

I’m posting the conversation because I think a lot of Americans are quietly having the same thoughts:

ME: You still happy with your vote?

HIM: Depends what you mean by happy.

ME: That doesn’t sound like a yes.

HIM: I voted for him for a reason. The border. The economy. I was tired of Democrats acting like everything was fine when it clearly wasn’t.

ME: I’m not asking why you voted for him. I’m asking how you feel about it now.

HIM: I still think some of the reasons were right.

ME: But?

HIM: But I’m starting to wonder if I confused wanting change with trusting the person promising it.

ME: What changed?

HIM: It wasn’t one scandal.

ME: Then what was it?

HIM: I realized how often I was making excuses.

ME: Excuses for what?

HIM: Everything. He’d say something crazy and I’d say, “He doesn’t really mean that.” Something would come out and I’d say, “The media is twisting it.” Someone from his own administration would criticize him and I’d say, “That person is just bitter.”

ME: And now?

HIM: Eventually you notice you’re spending more time explaining why somebody isn’t what they appear to be than defending what they’re actually doing....

They photographed the balcony by helicopter, and then dismantled it.
