Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans.

@itsjerrenn@PsychicCancer@writtenbyirene This is really fun to think about I feel like modernism is the name art historians have since given to the period of changing social norms in art.. so in a way I guess both? Like art w/ “normal people” nudity is a rejection of academic standards & an attempt to change the norm
@Senordipshit1@PsychicCancer@writtenbyirene Pumps specifically were not really a recognizable prostitute thing but they are attributes that wouldn’t belong on a mythological subject, so people knew the figure was a real person. Also, the name Olympia was apparently a common name used by sex workers in Paris at this time.
@PsychicCancer@writtenbyirene Btw, this painting is directly inspired by Titian’s “Venus of Urbino” (c. 1532). You can see quite a few parallels between the two. The title “Olympia” also directly refers to the strict standard of mythological nudes. Manet was deliberatelybreaking this standard to prove a point
@PsychicCancer@writtenbyirene v controversial & why art historians decided the modern art movement began here. Manet’s “Olympia” (1883-5) attached is the example we learned about breaking this academic rule of painting only holy figures in the nude but that fits right in that time frame too so it makes sense
@Lola_Debs @PsychicCancer@writtenbyirene I think you’re referring to Francesco Goya’s “Maja Clothed” and “Maja Nude” from the early 1800s. It was actually a duplicate painting, but yes, this is a similar concept. People were outraged and demanded he paint clothing over her body.
