I’m sure you’ve heard all the stories of Nikola Jokic — the unwitting superstar.
When Aaron Gordon arrived at his very first @nuggets practice, Jokic moved his shooting routine to a side hoop so Gordon could shoot on the main basket.
When people ask Jokic about his multiple MVP awards, he rolls his eyes and changes the subject.
When Jokic is pressed about his diminished role in the NBA All Star game, he jokes about how he’s the greatest in-bounder in All Star history.
But I noticed another side to Jokic recently.
I saw the quiet, erudite leader who needs not say a word to play the alpha dog in the Nuggets locker room.
Rookie Christian Braun held court in the middle of a media scrum one day when Jokic waited off to the side for his duties in front of the cameras.
Braun, ever-loquacious that particular day, started going into detail about how the Nuggets planned to defend a particular player.
Joker, coy but diplomatic, noticed the conversation headed in a direction that could reveal coaching strategy, so he did what any great leader would do: he stepped in and told Braun his media session was over.
“Very good my brother. That’s the last question. Goodbye.”
Braun didn’t bat an eye. Heeding Jokic’s instructions, the rookie stood up and mid-sentence excused himself from the media scrum.
Jokic thanked his teammate, gave him a friendly pat on the back, and Sombor Shuffled his way into the media swarm.
Thus began five minutes of vague Jokerisms and witty repartee.
Nikola Jokic never glosses himself.
He never criticizes a coach or a teammate.
He never demeans an opponent.
And by God, with English as a second language, he never lets a teammate divulge a game plan.
He’s an egoless kingpin. And he will snatch your soul on a basketball court.
Life lesson after life lesson with you coach. I will forever cherish the many games and practices we spent together. Nobody has a better perspective on the game of baseball and how to live life than you do! Enjoy whatever lies ahead - you deserve it.
I am the luckiest man on the planet! Chatfield has a special place in my heart.
Shout out to the Chatfield community, the coaches and especially all the players that have given me the love over the years. I can always count on baseball to get me thru the day.
I'm not done! LFG!
