War is a blessing (barakat)!
This is one of the most infamous quotes of the Khomeini, And not knowing it is the very reason why many Western analysts misread the Iran-US conflict so laughably.
Apart from their irrational hatred of Trump, they simply do not understand the Islamic regime’s way of thinking.
They judge it by the standards of normal governments, but this regime operates on a completely different logic, one that is alien to them.
“War is a blessing” perfectly captures the mindset of the Islamic regime today, and during the eight-year war it dragged Iran into after the 1979 Revolution, a war with Saddam Hussein that the regime deliberately prolonged. Strange, isn’t it?
Yet this is exactly how this regime thinks.
When the regime took power, it inherited a relatively advanced and wealthy country almost effortlessly. It received a real treasure and immediately set out to export the revolution. In Lebanon it succeeded and built up Hezbollah by funding, arming, and equipping it from the ground up.
But when it tried the same thing in Iraq, inciting the Shia majority to rise up against Saddam, the plan backfired. Saddam used it as the perfect pretext to launch a full-scale invasion in 1980. The regime immediately labeled it the “Imposed War” and “Sacred Defense,” as if it had done nothing to provoke it ( sounds familiar right?)
Iran managed to push Iraqi forces back out of its territory in about two years. At that point any rational country would have ended the war. But the regime refused. For six more years it kept the war going, repeatedly saying things like “War is a blessing.”
And in a twisted way, it really was a blessing for the regime. Under the cover of war, they crushed dissent, suppressed the population, consolidated power, and gradually replaced the entire national system with the Islamic regime.
The clearest proof came in the summer of 1988, just before the war finally ended, when the regime ordered the mass execution of thousands of leftist political prisoners. They were buried in mass graves. The chaos and fog of war made it much easier to commit and hide these crimes. Once peace came, it would have been far harder.
For the Islamic regime, that eight-year war with Iraq was indeed a blessing. For Iran and the Iranian people, it brought nothing but destruction, death, and misery.
The same logic still applies today. For the regime, war or the threat of war is still a blessing. They believe it can unite people against an external enemy, distract from domestic failures, and help them consolidate their shaky position.
Many believes that one of the reasons @POTUS agreed on a ceasefire was precisely to stop this cycle, so the regime could no longer hide behind war and the real fractures inside Iran would become visible.
Islamic regime in Iran is not winning. It’s falling apart.
P.S. By the way, the name Barack (as in @BarackObama ) comes from the same Arabic root as “barakat”, it literally means “blessing.” Funny nah?
