Trump is doing everything he can to convince the Republican base that the most effective Republican governor in the country who has enacted policies consistent with their values is a cartoon villain conspiring with Biden against him. He's reverse engineering the "Russian collusion" narrative and applying it to a Republican rival. Most conservative media and pundits won't challenge him on his lies because they're either afraid of their audience or in bed with him. No Democrat in office could do as much damage to the Republican base as Trump because he can convince people that this is in their interest.
