Considering Alastor mentions Vox threw a tantrum after he rejected his offer and how he had to put Vox in his place this still very well could have happened. We just haven’t seen it.
Alastor never treated death as a final ending even when he was human, but as a threshold to be negotiated with, and so when he arrived in Hell he did not just become another sinner clawing for territory, he arrived already obsessed with the architecture of the soul itself, already convinced consciousness could be preserved, redirected, pinned into place like a voice caught forever inside the grooves of a record.
By trapping souls within his broadcast, dragging them into the endless dark frequency of his shadow, where fragments of souls continue screaming, woven into the chorus of his broadcasts until they become part of the performance itself, shows that Alastor’s greatest horror has never been death itself, but obscurity, irrelevance, becoming unreachable, and so even his cruelty as an overlord reflects that obsession by refusing his victims the mercy of vanishing completely.
This ability reflects the nature of radio as a medium, especially early radio, as that uncanny phenomenon of invisible, recognizable voices, because Alastor embodies a form of media built entirely around disembodied presence, around people existing as voices without bodies, and so he reduces sinners into the same state: trapped transmissions, lingering echoes suspended inside his shadow like stations forever broadcasting after the host has died.
Alastor comes across creepier and more unsettling in the pilot because he was deliberately portrayed as more of an eldritch horror, especially in Vaggie’s retelling of the lore of the ~Radio Demon~.
This frames him less like the Alastor we know and more like a horror story passed down through Hell, the animation cutting to distorted, almost feral frames, silhouettes that barely resemble a stable self. He appears in flashes rather than movements, like glimpses of something not meant to be fully seen.
The art style exaggerates this form, slipping between recognizable and monstrous, so during the lore sequence he feels less like a charismatic overlord and more like an ancient entity attached to radio frequencies and shadow, something Hell perceives more as a cryptid than a charming host of a hotel.
I'm always thinking about this because Alastor toying with his wire is so playful and seductive and out of synch with his words, but also Vox's wire sliding down to wrap around his wrist instead of his hand is possessive and desperate and that's sexy
Vox quietly toning down his aggression as Alastor and him get close again out of respect vs. Alastor getting really drunk one night- drunk enough for honesty- and grabbing him by the neck and telling him "STOP BEING BORING. I HATE IT. GRAB ME. HIT ME. TIE ME UP." He wants the +
I don’t think either Alastor nor Vox deserve anything besides eachother, their both huge assholes that deserve hell and nobody else could ever handle their bullshit. I sympathize with Vox sometimes but acting like Alastor isn’t what he deserves is just wrong, same with Alastor
