This is truly a great man. He has invested more in Ukraine than 185 countries combined.

Meet Howard Buffett, Warren Buffett’s middle son. He is 71 years old. He dropped out of college three times. He drinks Dr Pepper and looks for a McDonald’s wherever he travels.

Since the beginning of the war, his foundation has become the largest private donor to Ukraine: $1.4 billion.

Over four years, he has personally visited Ukraine 27 times.

In April 2022, he saw burned-out agricultural machinery and called the president of John Deere:

“How many combines are available in Europe?”

“Fifteen. All of them were supposed to go to Russia.”

“I’ll take them all.”

Then came all the available New Holland equipment in Europe. Altogether, more than 100 tractors and combines were provided to Ukrainian farmers.

He even tested demining equipment himself - on his own farm in Illinois, detonating explosives beneath rollers. When a Ukrainian deputy minister expressed doubts, Buffett told him:

“Stop counting my tractors. If necessary, I’ll blow up a thousand of them.”

Andriy Stavnitser initially asked him for $1 million for Superhumans. Buffett asked how much was needed to build the entire center.

“$14 million.”

“Okay. And what do you expect in return?”

“Nothing. Build it.”

Today, his support for Superhumans has reached $77 million, and the center has treated more than 1,700 patients.

But his largest area of spending is neither agricultural machinery nor prosthetics.

It is food: 642 million meals.

And that is only part of it:
* 344,000 windows replaced after Russian attacks;
* 9 bridges, 4 power plants, 2,500 generators, and 18 DNA laboratories;
* Much of Bucha rebuilt with his funding.

“I already have more friends in Ukraine than I do at home,” he says.

He celebrates birthdays in Ukraine, comes for Christmas, and even has a Ukrainian godson.

Friends, this is truly a great man - someone who understands that he cannot take all his money with him when he leaves this world.

I simply want to thank him and wish him well.

Whatever else one may say, this is real help from a person who had no personal obligation to Ukraine.

He simply chose to help.

When my country was attacked on 9/11, I volunteered. I went to West Point. I went to Afghanistan.

Your country was attacked, and you spend time convincing people to not support her. We are not the same.

And let’s be very clear about what you are continuously argue with your posts and when you call conscription “slavery” and systematically attack the legitimacy of a democracy requiring its citizens to defend it.

You are not merely criticizing abuses. I have condemned abuses too. You are attacking the principle that a free society may require its citizens to defend the very freedoms they claim as their birthright.

Perhaps a reminder of history is useful for a historian who has spent her career studying the Holocaust.

Who liberated Europe?

Do you imagine every young American, British, Canadian, Polish, and French man who fought his way across Europe wanted to be there? Do you think the men landing at Normandy preferred Omaha Beach to their homes, wives, children, and futures?

Of course not.

Free societies survived because ordinary people accepted an extraordinary obligation: citizenship sometimes requires service, sacrifice, and, in the darkest moments, fighting and dying.

Ukraine did not choose this war. It was invaded. Its survival as a sovereign nation is at stake. Conscription under those circumstances is not proof that freedom has failed. It is one of the terrible costs of preventing freedom from being extinguished.

We can condemn corruption. We can condemn abusive recruiters. We can demand accountability and humane treatment. I have.

But condemning abuses is fundamentally different from declaring the obligation to defend your country itself illegitimate. Which is what you do everyday.

And there is an irony here that should not be missed. You invoke freedom while enjoying the protection of a country whose freedoms were repeatedly secured by people who were drafted, volunteered, fought, and died.

Who do you think provides the conditions in which you are free to denounce the very concept of national service?

Authoritarian states are not going to stop mobilizing their populations because pseudo-Western intellectuals have decided national defense is oppressive. Russia certainly will not. Neither will China.

If only the democracies conclude that asking citizens to defend themselves is immoral, the result is not a freer world.

It is a defenseless one.

That is why this argument is so corrosive. Hollow out the West’s willingness to defend itself, call sacrifice oppression and service slavery, and eventually freedom becomes something everyone demands but no one is willing to defend.

You are a propagandist for Western disarmament and an apologist for national surrender.

Your ideas are poison to a free society and don’t belong here.

At their core, they are anti-American.
