10 GitHub repos that save me up to $500 monthly
these are all free open-source tools that would save you tons of money from paying for big SaaS.
1. n8n — workflow automation
replaces: zapier team (~$103/mo) or make pro (~$30/mo)
the catch: sustainable use license, not OSI open source. you can self-host for yourself or your company, but you can’t wrap it as a competing SaaS.
savings: ~$30–103/mo
2. https://t.co/L1sA0ddcKB — scheduling
replaces: calendly teams ($16/user/mo), savvycal ($12/mo)
the catch: open core. SAML SSO and some enterprise features sit under /ee/ commercial license.
savings: ~$16–32/mo
3. vaultwarden — password manager
replaces: 1password business ($7.99/user/mo), dashlane business ($8/user/mo)
the catch: you are now your own password manager backend. if your server dies without backups, your vault dies with it. set up automated backups first.
savings: ~$24–40/mo at 3–5 seats
4. plausible — privacy-friendly web analytics
replaces: plausible cloud ($9–49/mo), fathom ($15/mo)
the catch: less feature-dense than GA4. no multi-touch attribution, no deep funnels.
savings: ~$9–49/mo
5. immich — photo backup
replaces: google one 5TB ($24.99/mo), icloud+ 2TB ($9.99/mo)
the catch: still pre-1.0. the team explicitly tells you to keep an additional backup.
savings: ~$10–25/mo
6. stirling-pdf — pdf toolbox
replaces: adobe acrobat pro ($19.99/mo), smallpdf pro ($12/mo)
the catch: ~3GB docker image (libreoffice + tesseract bundled in).
savings: ~$12–20/mo
7. twenty — CRM
replaces: hubspot sales hub pro (~$100/seat/mo), salesforce starter ($25/seat/mo)
the catch: still v1.x — fewer integrations than mature CRMs. don’t migrate a 50-person sales org to it yet.
savings: ~$25–100/mo per seat
8. papermark — secure doc sharing with analytics
replaces: docsend standard ($65/mo), docsend advanced ($250/mo)
the catch: the hosted tier costs money. self-hosted gives you everything — but you have to host it.
savings: ~$65–250/mo
9. inbox-zero — AI gmail assistant
replaces: superhuman ($30/mo), shortwave premium ($16/mo)
the catch: you give AI write access to your gmail. set the rules conservatively before flipping to auto-execute mode.
savings: ~$16–30/mo
10. postiz — social scheduler (14+ platforms)
replaces: buffer team ($12/channel/mo), hootsuite professional ($99/mo)
the catch: heavy stack (postgres + redis + https://t.co/MMBzH6twLN). plan ~1GB RAM minimum on your VPS.
savings: ~$30–99/mo
the math
at full loadout (small team / heavy creator tier): n8n $103 + https://t.co/L1sA0ddcKB $32 + vaultwarden $24 + plausible $19 + immich $25 + stirling-pdf $20 + twenty $100 + papermark $65 + inbox-zero $30 + postiz $99 = ~$517/mo.
solo creators land closer to $200/mo. small teams comfortably clear $500. the gap widens with every seat you add.
every repo here is in the bigger list — full 100 with the honest catch on each: https://t.co/6bQZL7XGZ3
