@VraserX Ship of Theseus. I don't even think it'll be that difficult though. Look at split brain experiments. If you fused a few extra hemispheres on and one died what happens? What happens if one dies now? What happens if they are disconnected? "I" is a load bearing illusion.
@GPrime85 I've been all in on local AI for a few years, but "smart devices" connected to the internet are asking for trouble. So is cloud AI, depending on what you're using it for.
@ashxhart@elonmusk I threw a coffee your way, anyone who got great benefits out of tensorfold and can spare it likely will. Look forward to your future work. ๐ซก
I think we will ultimately genetically engineer meat with hardly any (or even no) brain other than the stem. Assuredly too mindless to eat and take care of itself but ideal for factory farming. Growing humans with no brain (only stem) for autonomous functions would be ideal for organ replacements/etc too. All of it would look horrific but wouldn't be.
I marked "No", but I feel like this question is a category error. My definition of consciousness is "the unfolding experience of being an actor in the world". This is a gradient and not a binary. We do tend to award moral consideration based on the fidelity and length of this gradient. So, a system with sufficiently advanced continuity (memory + autonomy) is conscious. A stateless API call to format a JSON object is as well, but way lower on the gradient.
If the "NPCs" were not aware of the tasks they had done just one hour prior, I think the level of moral consideration would collapse to "don't be abusive or cause suffering."; and in that scenario.
@the_void_is_nil@teckwyn@RokoMijic The thing that gets me most is all the doomer scenarios both require magic (not science), and also get assigned percentages. 40%, 10%, 30%. Source? Someone's ass.
@VraserX The most important thing if we hit LEV is to have a permanent frontier (Space). Can you imagine the brutality of the gerontocracy being born into a world where everyone is hundreds of years old and owns everything?
Yeah, that actually makes an immense difference though because humanity will probably be spread throughout the solar system at that point and have millions or more ASI with competing goals by the time any one of them could go rogue, attempt to defeat all the others and... I dunno, become king ASI?
The reality of everything belies the singleton god the doom requires.
Any being that can create matter and energy ex nihilo thereby violating thermodynamics is a god. If such a being existed we would already be it's servants because it would have taken over the universe. The magic of AI requires immense energy and the most complex manufacturing and supply chain humanity has ever achieved.
Anyone spouting a bullshit doom prophecy has left physical reality behind and descended into eschatology. This eschatology requires humanity to be the first species in the entire universe to have create a god that can create matter and energy ex nihilo, and also requires us to abandon thermodynamics and every scientific fact that enabled such creation.
@SkyeSharkie The fringes of most every movement fall into purity spirals. pDoom purity spiral just happens to be particularly entertaining. I am especially fond of the appeals to mysticism and disregard for physical reality.
Thermodynamics and the efficiency of using robots to do a task means a great number of physical tasks are unlikely to be done by robots anytime soon (next century).
So, my prediction is overall SI drives the price of *everything* down (massive deflation) but things like mining, fixing septic tanks and other dirty jobs that would break robots on the regular become high paying (relative to costs) as a result.
The amount of cost deflation is going to be very extreme and I haven't seen anyone take a serious attempt at modeling it. In order to do it you'd need to figure out which jobs are dirty and irregular (robotics would break down frequently), which aren't, factor in needing to put up robot repair places all over, etc. Probably logistics (the cost of moving something) is going to be the majority of the price of things.
I don't think the singularity is very compatible with leftist thought because it's abundance and a hugely growing economy and most of leftism is zero-sum and about managing austerity.
@Scobleizer I spend way more of my time talking to agents at this point than humans; and em-dash is a tempting piece of punctuation sometimes.
Mostly skim X for tech news/serving recipes/etc. Some regions produce posts far more vacuous than the average AI.
