Women in Peacekeeping: India’s Legacy in Liberia

The Ducor Institute for Social and Economic Research, Liberia, has published a research report titled "The Contribution and Legacy of India’s All-Women Formed Police Unit in the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), 2007-2016."

The publication documents the contribution and service of India’s All-Women Formed Police Unit, the first such contingent deployed in a United Nations peacekeeping mission. We are pleased to share the e-book version of this publication.

Onam Celebrations in Liberia

Ambassador Manoj Bihari Verma along with other members of the Embassy, joined Onam celebrations organized by Mahatma Cultural Centre in Monrovia on 23 August 2006. Extending greetings to the Malayali community, he spoke of the message of Onam of equality, harmony and prosperity and wished everyone happiness and continued success.

The occasion featured enthralling cultural performances by men, women and children of the community, showcasing India’s rich cultural traditions and adding colour and festivity to the celebrations.

A delegation of Liberian legislators, led by Hon. Ellen A. Attoh-Wreh, Chairperson of the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia, visited India from 10-16 August 2026 under the South-South Peer Learning Programme. The programme forms part of the IBSA funded project, “Women Legislators in Liberia: Promising Voice, Leadership and Gender-Responsive Governance for Sustainable Development.”

During their visit, the delegation held wide range of engagements, including meetings with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Minister for Women & Child Development Smt. Annpurna Devi, among other interactions focused on sharing experiences and strengthening cooperation on women’s leadership and gender-responsive governance.

Foreign Minister of Liberia H.E. Mme. Sara Beysolow Nyanti visited New Delhi on 13 August 2026. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and FM Nyanti held bilateral talks, reviewing the full spectrum of India-Liberia relations, including technology, agriculture, health, mining, energy, trade & investment, education and capacity building.

The Ministers also exchanged views on regional and multilateral issues, including reformed multilateralism, a reformed UN Security Council and strengthening the voice of the Global South. EAM congratulated FM Nyanti on the inauguration of Liberia’s Embassy in New Delhi.

Embassy of India hosted a reception at Monrovia City Hall to celebrate the 80th Independence Day of India. H.E. Amb. Ethel Davis, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, graced the occasion as Chief Guest and delivered remarks on behalf of the Government of Liberia.

The celebration was honoured by the presence of H.E. Samuel A. Stevquoah, Minister of State for Presidential Affairs; H.E. Jerolinmek M. Piah, Minister of Information; H.E. Cllr. Cooper Kruah, Minister of Labour; H.E. Charles Umehai, Deputy Minister for Energy, Ministry of Mines and Energy; Members of the Legislature; senior officials of the Government of Liberia; Ambassadors and members of the Diplomatic Corps & international organisations; media representatives; and members of the Indian community.

The evening featured captivating cultural performances, making it a memorable celebration of India-Liberia friendship, unity and shared traditions.
