Talked to a Power 5 coach yesterday whose son was at a big showcase in the Southeast.

A travel ball club texts “the kid” (it was actually the dad/coach)… misspells his name… and tries to recruit him to their org.

Maybe do a little background on who you’re dealing with? At least get the name spelled right 😂😂😂

Start by paying them better. Price of participation has gone up.

Second, have guardrails protecting umpires from unruly parents - ejection of a parent means both the parent and kid have to go?

Also, I think if ejections happen then there should be some type of suspension and record kept. There are no repercussions to being ejected currently (coach, players or parents).

Last, on the other side, we need umpires who care, aren’t overworked, and do a their best when they show up - take pride in the craft. Lots of umpires in the youth space who don’t care at all.

Lots of people bash youth baseball these days, and yeah, there are real problems worth fixing.

But the toothpaste is out of the tube. It’s not going back in.

So you’ve got two real options:

1. Keep shouting into the void about everything that’s broken (plenty of that already).

2. Be a positive force—give real insight, help where you can, and push meaningful change. Your sphere might be big or small. Both matter.

The game has changed. Clamoring to rewind the clock helps no one.

What actually moves the needle is finding your lane and adding value in it.
