Dr Syed Maqbool’s case is a reminder for all doctors in Kashmir: no husn-e-gamkhari, please.

From what I understand, the issue is not that patients received no treatment. The allegation is that patients who clinically required Left Bundle Branch Area Pacing (LBBAP) underwent that procedure, but the cases were booked under the government-approved Dual Chamber Pacemaker package because LBBAP was not covered under the Ayushman insurance scheme. This enabled patients to receive some financial assistance through the government package, while the additional cost of the LBBAP hardware was paid by the patient to the private company.

Whether one views this as an attempt to help patients or as a violation of the rules, the lesson for doctors remains the same.

Compassion is at the heart of medicine, but so is protecting yourself. Never let the desperation of patients or their families push you into going against government rules or established protocols, however well-intentioned your actions may be.

Maintain proper documentation. Communicate clearly with patients and their families. Ensure that every decision is backed by regulatory compliance.
