Unpopular Opinion: "Freak matching" is just a trendy excuse for settling. Quirky or not, if you're chasing someone who "gets" your weirdness, you're still chasing validation, not love.
How many women are living in “prisons” right now without even realizing it?
Not prisons with bars. Not cells with guards. But invisible prisons built inside relationships where freedom, joy, and safety have been taken away.
8. Minimization is another tactic. They may say, “It was not that bad.” Or, “At least I did not hit you.” Or, “You are exaggerating.”
If it hurt you, then it mattered. Dismissing your pain is not a defense. It is abuse on its own.
They thought it was love. But it was control, fear, and silence dressed as romance. Abuse does not always leave bruises. Sometimes it leaves confusion.
✋🏽 Thread: How to identify abuse when it hides in plain sight.
7. The cycle of abuse is a trap. It often looks like this: tension builds, an outburst happens, then an apology comes with promises of change. After that, there is a honeymoon stage where everything feels perfect. Then the cycle repeats.
6. Emotional manipulation is love turned into a weapon. They may guilt you for setting boundaries. They may use your fears or secrets against you. They may say, “If you loved me, you would do this.”
If someone twists your pain to control you, that is not love.
5. Financial control is another common tactic. It may begin with, “I will handle the money, do not worry.” Or, “Why not quit your job? I will take care of you.”
Soon every expense needs their approval.. Your independence slips away until leaving feels impossible.
4.🚩Gaslighting is one of the most damaging forms of abuse. It makes you question your memory, your feelings, and your sense of reality.
It sounds like, “You are too sensitive.” Or, “That never happened.” The more you doubt yourself, the more you rely on their version of events.
3. 🚩 Another sign is walking on eggshells. If you hold your breath before speaking, rehearse conversations in your head, or change your behavior just to keep them calm, something is wrong.
Healthy relationships are safe and steady.
2. 🚩 Isolation is one of the earliest red flags. It rarely begins with a command to stop seeing your friends. It begins with a comment like, “Your best friend does not really like me,” or “Your family does not understand us.”
Over time, invitations are questioned.
1. Abuse is not always loud. It does not always look like screaming matches or slammed doors.
Often it is quiet. It looks like someone protecting you. It looks like passion. It looks like someone who says they only want what is best for you. That is what makes it so dangerous.
