Mother Faints During Water-Pouring Rite for Slain Shop Owner; Pattaya Police Chief Kneels in Apology Amid Grieving Family and Colleagues
Pattaya, Chonburi – In a heart-wrenching scene filled with sorrow, the mother of a 41-year-old cannabis shop owner fatally shot by an intoxicated police officer on Walking Street collapsed during the traditional water-pouring funeral rite.
The victim, Mr. Phatthraphon (or King) Jirachokchaikul, 41, was shot dead in the early hours of April 19th, 2026, behind his cannabis shop on Walking Street in South Pattaya. According to police reports, the shooter was Police Lieutenant Colonel Jirasak Srikatthanam, 54, also known as “Major Joe” a senior investigator attached to Pattaya City Police Station who had recently completed a senior officers’ training course. He was reportedly heavily intoxicated at the time.
The officer has been charged with murder and multiple firearms offenses, including discharging a weapon and carrying a firearm in a public place without justification. He has also been placed under a severe disciplinary investigation and ordered removed from government service pending the outcome. He remains in custody.
On the day of the merit-making ceremony, the victim’s mother, Mrs. At Phongphai, 67, joined family members, relatives, and friends to perform the water-pouring rite on her son’s body. As the family conducted the ritual, Pol. Col. Anek Sarathongyu, Chief of Pattaya City Police Station, arrived with Pol. Lt. Col. Arus Sabanon, Deputy Superintendent of Investigations, and other senior officers from the station’s investigation team.
The Chief approached the victim’s mother, knelt before her, raised his hands in a traditional wai, and offered a personal apology on behalf of the command for the actions of the officer under his supervision. Upon seeing the police chief, Mrs. At broke down in loud sobs and fainted momentarily amid the emotional scene. She reportedly told him through tears:
“There’s nothing left. You tell me to stay calm, but how many years will it be before I see my son again? I raised him alone. Do you understand? My son was a good person. Was there any illegal drugs? King never touched them. So why did he shoot him?”
Her words deeply moved everyone present, including relatives and close friends who had come to pay their respects.
Mrs. At later told The Pattaya News reporters that her son had always been a responsible family man who earned an honest living and had a successful business. Despite his large, tattooed build, she insisted he never smoked himself, drank alcohol, or had any involvement with illegal drugs and his cannabis shop, legal in Thailand, was fully properly licensed and legal. On the contrary, he often warned friends and family to stay away from illegal narcotics.
When asked about her concerns regarding the legal case, the grieving mother expressed confidence in the justice system: “I still trust good police officers. I believe there are still good ones left, and I have faith in the judicial process. I don’t think my son will have died in vain.”
Pol. Col. Anek later spoke to the media, stating that his station, led by the investigations team, had provided full assistance to the family with all necessary documents to release the body from the police hospital for religious rites. He expressed profound shock and sorrow over the incident.
“As the commander of the suspect, I feel deeply heartbroken,” he said. “Today, we came to join the water-pouring ceremony and ask forgiveness at the body. We have requested permission from the family to sponsor the entire funeral expenses as a gesture of responsibility and sympathy for this tragic event.”
He added that senior officers and station personnel would attend the nightly chanting of Buddhist scriptures, starting with the first night on April 21st, and would continue to pay respects until the cremation.
