Marooned Maldivians in Australia — The Asaree Story, 1957
Marooned Maldivians from the local boat Asaree, captained by Vathabandeyri Kaleygefaanu of Gadhdhoo, photographed at the Woodman Point Quarantine Station, Western Australia, on 5 January 1958.

The boat, carrying 28 men and 2 women, had departed Malé on 7 December 1957 bound for Gadhdhoo. After drifting thousands of kilometres across the Indian Ocean, the group was rescued on the night of 26 December 1957 by the Danish ship MV Alva Maersk and transported safely to Australia.
The unexpected arrival of Maldivians in such a small vessel astonished Australian authorities and made headlines across the country. After quarantine, the passengers were cared for and later repatriated — one of the most remarkable survival and seafaring stories in modern Maldivian history.

The 10% salary cut is a smokescreen:
💰 Previous govt: 721 positions, MVR 18M/month
💸 Current govt: 2,500 positions, MVR 56.2M/month
They're trying to distract you with a 6.2M 'saving' while spending an extra 38.2M every month.
Reminds me of Venezuela's Maduro who used similar populist tricks in 2013-14: grand gestures of 'austerity' while expanding government spending, leading to economic collapse.
History teaches us: populist economics always ends in disaster.

I am amazed by the emergent behavior, community cohesion, and resilience in responding to this island level emergency. More intrigued by the women led ingenuity of a "bucket brigade," utilizing a very primitive method of firefighting.

Can't imagine our sandy Island lanes any other way. Why can't we line them up with ornamental plants? The whole premise that roads are for vehicles need to change. Roads are public spaces. Roads are for pedestrian, kids people young and old. We need to re-imagine our roads.
