𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗗𝗔𝗬 in 1990, Brazil went into the World Cup last 16 as overwhelming favourites against Argentina, but suffered one of the most difficult defeats in their history, despite producing one of the most dominant displays by a losing side in World Cup history.

Brazil were relentless from the opening whistle. Careca could have scored inside the first minute, Brazil fired three shots within 60 seconds, and Müller wasted a glorious chance after just five minutes. On 11 minutes, a dangerous corner flashed across goal with nobody able to apply the finishing touch.

The pressure never stopped. Dunga thundered a header against the crossbar, Careca hesitated when well placed to get a shot off. Argentina could barely escape their own half.

After the break, Brazil continued to dominate. Careca’s cross clipped looped just over, Alemão crashed a spectacular effort against the bar, and Careca’s header was well saved.

Argentina offered almost nothing, with Taffarel only called into action for his first meaningful save midway through the half.

Then came the decisive moment. After being quiet for 81 minutes, Maradona produced a flash of brilliance, gliding past challenges before releasing Claudio Caniggia with a perfectly weighted pass with his weak foot. Caniggia rounded Taffarel and slotted home, against the run of play.

Moments later, Ricardo Gomes brought down Basualdo as he raced through on goal, a straight red card.

Late on Maradona almost added a second from a free-kick, forcing an excellent save from Taffarel.

Brazil still had one last chance. In the 89th minute, Müller completely miskicked with the goal at his mercy.
It was an afternoon where nothing would go in.

Brazil had dominated from start to finish, struck the woodwork three times, created countless chances, and somehow crashed out of the World Cup.
