The most heavily fortified refuge in the history of the popes was originally built as a tomb...

It stands on the bank of the Tiber in Rome, a massive stone cylinder rising above the river, and for centuries it was the safest place in the city. When enemies marched on Rome, the pope did not stay in the Vatican. He fled here, across a secret elevated passage built into the city wall, and shut himself behind walls that had been standing since the age of the Caesars.

But it was not built for any of that.

Around 135 AD, emperor Hadrian commissioned it as a mausoleum for himself and his family. It was completed in 139, a year after his death, and his ashes were placed inside, along with those of the emperors who followed him, until Caracalla in the third century.

For a time it was the tallest building in Rome...

Then the empire fell, and the building began its second life. In the fifth century, its majestic walls and commanding position over the river made it a natural fortress, and it was absorbed into the defences of the city.

Its name changed after the year 590, when, according to legend, Pope Gregory the Great led a procession through a plague-stricken Rome and saw the Archangel Michael appear above the old tomb, sheathing his sword — a sign that the plague was ending. From then on, it was called the Castel Sant'Angelo, the Castle of the Holy Angel.

Over the following centuries it became almost everything a building can be. A fortress. A papal residence with frescoed Renaissance apartments. A treasury. A prison, whose cells held the condemned, and whose execution courtyard became the setting for the final act of Puccini's Tosca. Today it is a museum.

It has watched Rome rise, fall, and rise again for nearly nineteen centuries.

Hadrian built it so that he would not be forgotten after his death. He could not have imagined that the forgetting would never come and that his tomb would outlive his empire, his religion, and his entire world, and still be standing, full of visitors, two thousand years later...

Un vero peccato, perché obiettivamente sul 6-3 6-3 5-1 si trovava a un passo dalla vittoria, ma devo ammettere che il ragazzo qualche problema fisico se lo porta dietro da tempo. Houston, abbiamo un problema: dobbiamo dirlo chiaramente, ma solo lui, il suo team e i medici che lo seguono forse sanno come stanno veramente le cose. Da fuori posso supporre di tutto: dalla bulimia tennistica e lo stress da prestazione, al panico, il calore e l’umidità, per non parlare dell’impatto con la soglia del dolore che è una sensazione soggettiva influenzata da fattori organici e dai geni , ma da cui mi tengo alla larga perché è una materia di cui non sono competente.

Il sogno parigino finisce purtroppo così, ma questa è la dura legge degli sport singoli: se accusi problemi in campo non puoi chiedere il cambio e se non risolvi da solo la cosa, anche ribellandoti alla sconfitta, sei costretto ad alzare bandiera bianca. Lo puoi fare in due modi: ritirandoti come fanno quasi tutti o rimanendo in campo fino all’ultimo per rispetto verso te stesso, l’avversario e il pubblico. Sinner ha scelto la seconda via, dimostrando ancora una volta classe e signorilità: esce dal torneo nel solo modo in cui poteva succedere, ma anche lui è umano e questo forse ce lo avvicina ancora di più. Ci possono essere tante concause per questo malore: dalla programmazione, al troppo desiderio di vincere il torneo, un colpo di calore, la sensazione di non riuscire a respirare, non so. Credo che solo lui, il suo team e i medici che lo seguono sappiano la verità. Mi auguro che lo sappiano, in modo da trovare il modo, se non di risolvere la situazione, almeno di migliorarla. Io però obiettivamente non ne farei una tragedia: Sinner ha vinto cinque tornei di fila e io lo sapevo che nel momento in cui avesse perso una partita sarebbe successa la fine del mondo. Se si va a vedere, è capitato anche a suo favore: l’anno scorso ha vinto Wimbledon perché Dimitrov si è strappato la spalla e secondo me quella partita al 99% Jannik l’avrebbe persa. Nessuno è imbattibile e lui qui non è crollato al quinto set dopo 4 ore di partita, ma quando gli mancava un game per passare il turno. Magari superava il trauma e il malore, batteva Cerundolo, recuperava e la prossima partita l’avrebbe vinta tre set a zero. Anche la collocazione dell’orario di gioco, a mezzogiorno, non va presa come una mancanza di rispetto per il numero 1 al mondo. Mi spiego: gli slot in cui poter giocare sono quelli: le 12, le 16, le 19 o la sessione serale. Una volta te ne tocca uno, un’altra volta ti capita un altro orario. Al primo turno Sinner aveva giocato di sera perché sfidava un giocatore francese e volevano favorire il pubblico, questa volta non hanno avuto la stessa accortezza. Non è il caso di esagerare a gridare all’affronto perché nell’arco di un torneo, soprattutto sulle due settimane, capita a tutti di giocare a ogni orario. Qualcuno preferisce scendere in campo di giorno perché la sera vuole stare tranquillo, non gradisce finire a tarda notte per fare le interviste, i massaggi e il resto, qualcun altro invece ama il fresco della sera e la luce dei riflettori perché non riesce a ingranare a mezzogiorno per il caldo, ma tocca a tutti.
In fondo questo è il bello e il brutto del tennis: puoi vincere con i match point contro e puoi perdere con quelli a favore. Lo sport è questo, non mi sembra così difficile da capire: dispiace molto, moltissimo, ma la stagione continua, Wimbledon è alle porte. Ha perso Sinner, ma viva Sinner”
