[Hey guys, looks like we hit the end of the road... ☹️ I will keep my eye on the alternatives that may come up. Thank you for sticking around & I hope you will keep spreading the words of Mabel and Anna! 🐇🌙🍀]
I know you the way I know any of my other favourite characters. And if I’m wrong about you? Well, so I’m wrong about you. It’s not like you’re going to correct me.
Of all of these things, Anna, this I cannot forgive: that Sally was complicit in her reduction of herself. The way her mother was. The way my mother was. An endless line of women making the wrong choices, always for men. In this way even my own birth is a betrayal.
I’m not a real person either. It’s possible I never was. I’m wrong in ways that matter. But I never did this. And you are the only thing I care to care about.
I feel strange. Not completely real. Disconnected from my body, disconnected from my thoughts. A spinal column trailing over a bed of nerves. This isn’t my house, I shouldn’t be here alone, but I am. If the house is a heart, I’m its blood.
I was there in the dark. When she brought me to you, in the hall warm with firelight, when you had your hands full of angels’ trumpets and foxgloves and you turned to me and knew me, as though I was a piece of you, something you’d been missing.
Mabel Martin. It’s me, the bundle of thread in your pocket. Didn’t I say I wouldn’t leave you here alone? Didn’t I say I’d come after you, hand over hand, fist over fist, into the rot of the black earth, into the labyrinth? I would never leave you to face the monster on your own.
I cannot conceive of a world where this is a kindness you have done me; where this is anything but one thrust of a sword that must be met with another. How could you wound me this way? Why couldn’t you have left me to die, loving me afar, like the moon?
RES: I’ll see us in the papers as delinquents! ‘Heiress and female accomplice cat burgle manor with storied past’.
KATRIONA: Would that be the front page of the paper? Not exactly an incentive to leave.
I thought she was dead. She looked dead. Her lips were blue. I touched her hand, it was cold. There were rose-vines growing over her ankles. In loops, thick, covered in thorns.
MABEL: You're the king under the hill. What does the feel like?
ANNA: Multiplicity. Mycelia, hyphae. What is it supposed to feel like? Always back to that: what if I do it wrong?
MABEL: Then we become better. Greater. We don't wallow in it. We stick together.
Someday we will eat chorizo smoked potatoes, drink rose lemonade, feed each other fruit from our fingers. Someday you will ask me which dessert I want to buy at the bakery and I’ll say, all of them.
My grandmother - you know by now she was a weak woman. She took her greatness and held it in her hands and killed it, slowly, gently, the way all cowards kill something. With a kiss. With kindnesses.
ANNA: We can’t both be the sacrificial lamb, one of us has got to be –
MABEL: The knife? Oh, Anna, Saint Anna, we just trade off being the knife, and today it’s me, the bitch queen of hell.
It’s sunny here. That kind of defiant sunlight you get in autumn, when it’s cold and everything smells of smoke and dead leaves and the light is thrown out over the day.
