We remind media & commentators that Victoria Police have a range of tactical options available to them in protest situations other than use of force, batons and horses. Using injurious force against people refusing to move is the most likely to escalate & result in harm. #IMARC

Removal of identification name tags and refusal to give identification when asked. Legal Observers have observed police officers purposely removing their name badges and turning them around to obscure their identification. #IMARC @ibacVic

Police have been observed pushing protesters down concrete stairs and kicking protesters without giving prior warning to move on. Multiple injuries of protesters have been reported incl. one protester who was thrown into a cement wall and hit the back of his head. #IMARC

Our observations were that in numerous instances this use of force was excessive, harmful, unecessary and was well out of VicPol’s Use of Force guidelines.

Despite the crowds being loud and non-compliant, it appeared that the use of OC spray and batons was a measure to force compliance with a direction to move, rather than in response to violence or serious physical threat to police or bystanders.

Use of capsicum (OC)foam and police batons at #IMARC Legal Observers recorded police officers using batons to strike and push back protesters. OC was also used multiple times by police officers on the crowd of protesters. more...

Horses can cause servere, bone-breaking injuries. Legal Observers noted how the large ‘Earth Ball’ spooked them earlier today. They should be immediately withdrawn from crowded areas and their use prohibited. #IMARC @ibacVic

The use of horses in these circumstances is never justified. They are causing dangerous physical injuries to people who are simply standing in a picket line.
