In the past few weeks, Microsoft broke Windows Update on Windows Vista and Server 2008. This includes installs that had an ESU (extended security updates) subscription. It also includes clean installs of Windows 7 and 8, and Server 2008 R2 and 2012.
The Windows Update servers were reconfigured to no longer accept any of the TLS ciphers Vista, 7, or 8 support. It’s the same problem XP and Server 2003 has, and it manifests as the infamous error 80072EFE.
Currently, the only versions of Windows that work with Windows Update out of the box are Windows 8.1, 10, and 11. Earlier versions require a certain set of updates to be applied manually before it will work. Vista, XP, and 2000 also require using a third-party update server. (8.1 works, but has bugs with it taking an incredibly long time to check for updates, so manually installing certain updates is recommended anyway.)
