Sergeant William Henry “Black Death” Johnson of the 369th Infantry Regiment (Harlem Hellfighters). In North France, Johnson, despite being stabbed, shot, & hit with grenade shrapnels, single-handedly fought off a German raiding party receiving 21 wounds in order to save fellow soldier Private Needham Roberts.
He managed to kill & injure about 20 German soldiers all by himself. In 2015, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery.
When describing the event, he maintained that he was not a hero, stating, “There wasn’t anything so fine about it. Just fought for my life. A rabbit would have done that.”
