🌑 Punishment for resisting death

I am tired of whining about the war, of pitying, of complaining. Foreigners are more tired of the war than Ukrainians, and you will no longer move or shock anyone with yet another Russian strike on children who were playing on a playground, on a residential building or an educational institution. Even the new Holodomor in Oleshky leaves the world indifferent. For the world, evil and terror have become the norm. I myself find it somehow unpleasant to pour so much negativity onto the heads of people who already have their own problems. Whom does another’s grief concern? Only the best — but they too grow tired…

I find it unpleasant to write news, because I have my own voice; I am not a journalist and not a news resource. Nobody pays me for the work. But my own voice is closed to me as well; they tell me to be silent when I try to express an opinion about something, all the more so when there is criticism there. Criticising something in Ukraine you automatically become a Russian agent even if you are a brigade commander at the front (a friend of mine in that post was declared a Russian agent by NAFO in 2022 for criticising the president; I was too, because I criticised methods of mobilisation and corruption). Being a writer not only of serious topics but also of erotic stories I have no right to post even a photo in a mini-skirt or with a neckline, because I immediately become a victim of harassment on the grounds that it is unseemly, that I am a low-grade girl who publishes such things. They are not even interested in my views on all this. Perhaps I would ignore the opinion, as I ignore what Russians write — but when supporters of Ukraine write it, it is hard to remain indifferent to their opinion.

I also have no right to be good, because if it irritates me when Ukrainians become like Russians and write them the same filth they write us in the comments — I become almost a traitor in their eyes. But are they guilty for having succumbed to just hatred? I am guilty, I who fought against it. Ukrainians consider those who have the possibility and do not shout to the whole world about the crimes of the TCC against the Ukrainian people to be scoundrels — but those who report them are already considered enemies of Ukraine by foreigners. And who are they to interfere in internal affairs, so everything remains unchanged? Corruption has gone nowhere either, though they fight it and they fight those who fight corruption. Ukraine does not receive funds because the authorities sabotage the promised anti-corruption laws, but “the president is a hero” — foreigners convince Ukrainians.

Sleepless nights because of air-raid alerts and explosions. Power cuts. Rising prices and utilities, and at the same time nowhere to get money. You already think how stupid I was to start recording songs, to open my own website, to begin developing apps there for learning Ukrainian and quizzes about Ukraine, because all of this requires funds and I increase expenses when I need to save. Support decreases in proportion to foreigners’ fatigue with the war.

It resembles stories of a lone warrior. The war has ended, and he still alone holds the defence, the fight. That is exactly how the Kholodnyi Yar Republic stood — a Ukraine that inside the USSR held on for many more years, and the Russians were so afraid that they went around the region. That is what Ukraine is now inside a Russified Europe in which Russian assets come to power. Sometimes you wonder how people can be so unintelligent. Or perhaps they are simply selfish? They do not want to think; they float with the current and are ordinary masses who are manipulated. There are no good politicians anyway, so one has to vote for evil in any case. The question is only the colouring of this evil.

So many times I wanted to give up. Not before Russia, of course, and not before the masses. Probably the most disgusting thing is to become one of the crowd. I wanted simply to abandon all these things, to stop writing, to stop fighting for something better, to become a cynic who sees no light and to leave the country and never return, as a large part of Ukrainians do and plan to do. But that would not have been me. That would have been a betrayal of myself and of my own values. Perhaps there is no sense in fighting against the system, because it is stronger — but that is not a reason to give up and become like everyone. I find it disgusting to write what others write; I do not like copying other people’s work; I want to be the author of my own posts. And perhaps only the text, my thoughts, will be uninteresting; perhaps this will not add support for me and I will have to save even on food — still, this will be my voice.

But then a terror happens, an event about which one cannot be silent, and again everything goes in a circle…

How is this circle to be broken? And is it worth it? How does one live? What is right and what is not? Now, when all the values of this world have turned out to be false, when the laws do not work, I simply do not know. We seem to have returned to a primitive state. But perhaps this is a reason to be reborn into something new?

Recently I was driving some journalists around, knowing they were going into places where proper protection really mattered.

One of them put on their plate carrier and I heard that unmistakable clink.

I asked what kind of plates they had.

Steel.

Two sheets of metal. Something I honestly haven’t seen someone relying on since 2022.

The problem with steel plates is spalling. When they’re hit, fragments can deflect and cause terrible injuries, especially around the neck and face.

So I took the Level 6 ceramic plates out of my carrier, gave them mine, and took the steel ones as my own.

When they were finished, they tried to give my plates back.

These are people putting themselves in danger to tell the stories of what’s happening in Ukraine. I couldn’t look at those steel plates, know what I know, and send them back out wearing them.

So I told them to keep mine.

What I didn’t know was that replacing them was going to be such a pain. Level 6 ceramic plates are difficult to find right now, and after weeks of waiting through my normal retailer, I still hadn’t managed to replace them.

Today, thanks to @mtac_ua and you, I at least have Level 5 ceramics.

A little heavier and not quite what I’m used to, but I have plates again.

It made me think about how many times I’ve been able to do something like this.

Give someone a real tourniquet when I find a fake one in their kit. Pull something out of my IFAK or medical bag because somebody needs it more in that moment. Hand over a piece of equipment because I know I have a better chance of finding another one.

A lot of the time I can make those decisions without thinking about what it is going to cost me afterward.

That is because of you, thank you.

Thank you for making sure I can replace the things I give away.

Thank you for allowing me to help people in real time. And thank you for keeping me safe too.

Sometimes I don’t think people realize how far their support actually travels.

Today I put proper plates back into my carrier.

And I just wanted you to know that you were part of that.
