“God accepts our desires as though they were a great value. So let us not be apathetic in our asking.”
— St. Gregory Nazianzen
In church youth group growing up, the message was that you can’t trust your desires. That you can’t trust yourself. I learned to think of myself as a ticking sin bomb waiting to explode.
It took many years and a lot of work to dig out of that mess. And it took re-discovering a more beautiful way even in the Christian tradition, the voices of saints like Gregory Nazianzen (died 390 AD) and the contemplative tradition of the church to awaken me to the depths of goodness, dignity, and holy desire not just as some “therapeutic” import to the faith (as I was often told) but as the inheritance of every image-bearer and all whose lives are hidden with Christ in God.
How do Gregory’s words meet you today?
“You’re much more than your sadness and you’re much more than your frown.
More than a yell or a tap or a pout
More than a bellow or a slap or a doubt.
You’re more than a moment, a feeling, a part,
You’re more than an outside, you’re inside your heart.”
"Our society is much more interested in information than wonder, in noise rather than silence...And I feel that we need a lot more wonder and a lot more silence in our lives"
“Confronting our feelings and giving them appropriate expression always takes strength, not weakness. It takes strength to acknowledge our anger, and sometimes more strength yet to curb the aggressive urges anger may bring and to channel them into nonviolent outlets.”
@TeawithTolkien With the text mentioning Tom has darker skin, I always thought @reggiewatts would make a fantastic bombadil. With both the quirkiness, the singing, the whismy and mystery, Reggie is definitely my head cannon for Bombadil
