@jim_johnson155 Thanks Jim. And I found out that once a year, for a 5 day period, the original 5-hole course (or as close as possible) is made available to play. I’m going to try and play it next year.
There’s always time each day for a bit of golf history. It was wonderful to visit Leith Links in Edinburgh today to see a key location for early golf, the John Rattray sculpture and remember that this man signed the first rules of golf. The church spire in the image remains today
This week an incredible opportunity arose to play the original 12 hole course @PrestwickGC as they celebrate their 175th anniversary. As 1985 Open Champion Sandy Lyle battled the links with his hickory clubs, the course that gave birth to The Open in 1860 stood firm. A great day!
@AlistairPhilp1 Having worked for Peter in his golf design office in Melbourne, and retained contact when I moved to St Andrews in 1998, his most remarkable skills may have exceeded his golfing abilities. He was a statesman, ambassador for golf, and a wonderfully kind and generous gentleman.
@HazzaSColt Moving greens, is a big change, I agree. The 5th green is an interesting case however. Due to the distance some golfers can now hit the ball, the 11th green and 12th tees do occasionally get hit with offline 2nd or 3rd shots to 5th green. A ‘Copy & paste’ move left may help…
I’m with the majority… Muirfield is one of the great golf courses in the world… may even be in a list of top sport venues (Wembley, MCG, Fenway Park, Monza etc). The best places transcend fads and fashion - are not subject to changing tastes. Class is permanent.
@HazzaSColt It’s an interesting time: Traditionally The Open Championship was set-up to fit the host venue courses. The increased commercial aspects of this major sports event have seen golf courses changed so they fit The Open. I hope Muirfield resits any significant changes.
@CabotHighlands delights again. Old Petty is the new course and it sits beautifully alongside Castle Stuart as a distinctive and thrilling golf course for those looking for a new challenge. The fairway turf is fantastic and greens run beautifully. Add it to your playing list now.
Super Congrats to @ryanfoxgolfer winning The Open today. He played so brilliantly all week and especially down the stretch. It’s a fantastic achievement, but also for New Zealand golf. After Sir Bob Charles, Michael Campbell and Lydia Ko, NZ has a new golf Major star! AWESOME
Great to be Muirfield to see some of the most incredible and talented golfers competing in the Women’s Amateur Championship on this famous links. These woman can play!
@anthonyjdear Rocklodge is the P&P equivalent of an Open Championship course. It had some tricky holes. For everyday play, and for people first coming to golf, more elementary target greens and hazards are all that’s required. And these exist. 👍👍
Grateful to Frank - an Irish Pitch&Putt champion - for super fun at Douglas and Rocklodge P&Ps in Cork. Holes ranged from 27 to 70m. Mats for tees, turf greens. Hazards are trees, mounds, slopes and bunkers. Quick and cheap to play. Great for everyone. Make this an Olympic sport!
@Daib212 Totally agree. More of these would be great for golf…. in every country of the world, especially those emerging nations. Short courses broaden the base for access into the game, and reduce the barriers created by such things as cost, time, equipment and difficulty.
Carne Golf Links took my breath away. It’s one of those experiences that rolls you back to origins of golf when playing was a cross country adventure from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’. The scale of the dunes is at the “epic” end of any measurement. If you like your golf raw, book Carne
@eireyiddo I love P&P golf and other short forms of the game. Great places to learn the game, develop skills and have fun. Will post about that tomorrow.
Love Golf? Play in Ireland.
I’m on an insane trip. Royal Dublin, Old Head, Pitch & Putt, Enniscrone, Carne, County Sligo, Lough Erne.. it’s a combo of links and inland golf, championship and short courses. Expect to lose a few balls, get wet and have an absolute blast! ⛳️👍👍
@CambridgeGrey@Driftless_Golf@fried_egg_golf@AndyTFE That’s correct, the 1886 was played on the ‘left hand course’. The Amateur Championship is a matchplay event and Hutchinson won the final match 7&6. What’s also amazing is that he won the 1887 Amateur also.
