#BrownNoise is having a moment on TikTok and in the news.
But when did we first start using noise as comfort sound? And why do we seem to need it?
I wrote about it for @washingtonpost:

It was fascinating to talk with @mactra for this longform interview on @PhantomPod about architecture, acoustic media, and the noisy environments of open-plan offices. https://t.co/usk1B5FLI6
@RedThunderAudio@aacierto@CharlesEppley@DrMarieThompson Thanks, yes, besides the chapter in my book, I've written several media/film studies pieces on it over the past 15 years, including in Sounding Out and The Cine Files. Recently did a podcast too: https://t.co/5K7PoRZhnR
New episode: @mattrubery, a literature prof who pioneered the study of audiobooks, talks narration, neurodiversity, and "audiobook shame."

@RTMannJr As a Louisiana native and a prof at an Ohio public university, I’ve been amazed that the punitive anti-faculty legislation happened here before it happened back home.
Best of luck, y’all. It’s a miserable experience.
Choosing not to participate in Twitter discourse isn’t ‘silence’, let alone ‘complicity’ with anything. If I thought anyone was waiting for my opinion, maybe I’d offer it, but probably not in 280 characters on here
Look around. Everyone’s on mute because of noise-canceling headphones. But now some people are rethinking their personal audio bubbles. https://t.co/g3SrOUy0el
Colored noises are having a major moment.
Particular “colors” of noise may lead to different outcomes. Want to fall asleep? Try pink noise. Need to focus? Brown noise may be best. https://t.co/m8OyuyRDLz
"Many students majoring in English, philosophy and film get impressive opportunities right out of college."

@adam_tooze refreshing to see someone just unapologetically treat as a premise the view that surges in far-right politics is a predictable sociological phenomenon that has alterable material conditions. too much moralizing about this fact and too little strategic thinking about it imho
