Marriage Is a Union of Love, Not a Rulebook

Pope Leo XIV recently declared, "Marriage is only possible between a man and a woman." While this reflects a traditional perspective rooted in certain religious doctrines, it confines the infinite nature of love to a narrow box. Love can not be caged by definitions or restricted by rules. It is a vibrant, living force that flourishes where hearts align—between people, not prescriptions. With respect, I urge Pope Leo XIV to let love live, to embrace its beauty in all its forms, and to see marriage as a sacred bond between souls who find peace, joy, and fulfillment in each other, regardless of gender.

Love does not require a man and a woman to be whole. It thrives when two people discover in each other a home—a space of comfort, laughter, and shared dreams. Marriage is the celebration of that connection, a vow to nurture it through life’s joys and challenges. To insist it must only be between a man and a woman is to overlook the radiance of countless relationships that are equally profound. Same-sex couples, for instance, create homes filled with the same devotion, care, and happiness as any other. Their love is no less sacred, no less real, and no less deserving of the name “marriage.”

The world is evolving, and so is our understanding of love and family. Across societies, people are redefining marriage—not as a rigid institution, but as a living expression of commitment. In many nations, laws now recognize love between people of any gender, affirming that joy and fulfillment know no boundaries. These unions are not a rejection of faith but a fulfillment of its deepest call: to love one another with patience, kindness, and openness.

To Pope Leo XIV(@Pontifex), I say gently: do not dictate who can find solace in another’s heart. Love is not a doctrine to enforce; it is a gift to cherish. When two people choose each other—not out of duty, but out of joy—they create something divine, no matter who they are. The Church teaches that love is patient and kind. Let it also teach that love is free—free to blossom between any two souls who find in each other their peace, their purpose, and their joy.

Let us step beyond cages. Let us honor marriage as a union of love, not a rulebook. Let us celebrate every couple who builds a life together, facing the world hand in hand. Above all, let us let love live—in all its beautiful, boundless forms.
