Every year, the UN marks this day. Every year we would speak about how this hideous practice still goes unpunished. Increasingly, women who were subjected to female genital mutilation are speaking up and leading the campaign to #EndFGM. We should salute their courage.
Catherine Mootian was just twelve years old when she underwent female genital mutilation, a moment that changed her life forever.
Today, Ms. Mootian is the founder of AfyAfrika – leading the fight to #EndFGM, and to help survivors heal.

I'm a great supporter of responsible use of AI. There's a lot that needs to happen to create guardrails to ensure ethics and benchmarks in how we draw on AI. The UN needs to do this within and be the standard-setter in how we embrace AI in our work.
“Humanity’s fate cannot be left to an algorithm.”
UN chief @AntonioGuterres warns the Security Council that #AI without guardrails could fuel war, cyberattacks and disinformation.

AI-powered weapons that can select and strike targets without human control are no longer science fiction.
The technology is moving faster than regulation and urgent action is needed.
The UN is calling for new international rules to deal with this emerging threat.

Thirty-one years later, we remember the horror of hate speech, hate crimes and death unleashed in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The lessons are there for all to learn in the face of growing intolerance.
