The ColorOS 17 update is looking pretty good.

The new animations are fun. The bouncy effect and the glowing borders of the button really makes you view the important parts.

What I liked the most is that you can pull a notification down and turn it into a floating window. This feature is really useful for multitasking.

The operation looks smooth. This update focuses on making the UI easy to use.

Apple is having a rough week 🥲 Green lines, a Face ID reboot bug, and a 30GB surprise nobody asked for.

📱 iPhone 18 Pro owners are getting green, pink and red lines on their displays. Some already got replacements from Apple but Apple hasn't said a word about it.

🔄 iOS 27 has a Face ID bug where one failed attempt freezes your iPhone and reboots it. Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac's Benjamin Mayo that a fix is coming early next week.

💻 Mac users aren't safe either. macOS 27 force downloads Apple Intelligence files and removed the option to turn it off. Apple says it should take up to 14GB but users are seeing 20 to 30GB.

🧊 There's a viral freeze bug where a two-swipe gesture can freeze any iPhone on iOS 27. Only a force restart saves you.

If this had happened with almost any Android flagship brand, the backlash would probably be massive by now.

Apple has started using QLC NAND extensively in the 1TB and 2TB versions of the iPhone 18 Pro series. The problem is simple: compared with TLC, QLC is a storage technology that prioritizes higher density and lower cost. It allows manufacturers to offer larger capacities more efficiently, but sustained write performance, performance after cache exhaustion, and write endurance are all inherently weaker. And now we have real-world testing that shows just how large the gap can become.

HOMOLAB tested a 1TB QLC iPhone 18 Pro Max. With plenty of SLC cache available, write speeds can exceed 3,000 MB/s, so during normal use, opening apps or taking a few photos, you may never notice anything unusual. But once the cache is exhausted, average direct-to-QLC write speed drops to around 79.4 MB/s, with lows of roughly 25.6 MB/s. When storage usage reaches around 60%, the available SLC cache reportedly shrinks from about 250GB to 58GB, while average direct QLC write speed falls to around 45 MB/s. In an extreme case, it even dropped to just 1.1 MB/s.

The gap also shows up in mixed read/write workloads. A 512GB TLC model scored 11,285, while the 1TB QLC version scored only 8,168, a difference of nearly 38%.

And this is where the situation becomes especially questionable. The 1TB and 2TB models are the most expensive versions, and they are also the ones most likely to be bought by power users and professionals. These are exactly the users who are more likely to record long ProRes or 4K videos, transfer huge files, batch-process photos and videos, or keep their storage heavily occupied.

So you pay more for more storage, yet you may end up with inherently weaker NAND.

Apple’s storage controller and caching strategy are genuinely impressive. In most everyday scenarios, they can hide many of QLC’s weaknesses extremely well. But cache can only hide those weaknesses. It cannot change the underlying physical characteristics of QLC NAND.

If another flagship brand did this on its most expensive high-capacity models, I can only imagine how brutal the reaction would be.
