I bought a $2,400 3D printer because the dishwasher at my house needed a $7 knob.

Our hardware budget had money left at the end of the quarter.

Finance said anything unspent would disappear.

I found an industrial 3D printer and described it as “rapid infrastructure prototyping.”

My boss asked what we would prototype.

I said replacement brackets, cable guides, rack components, and other parts with long vendor lead times.

That sounded responsible.

The printer arrived on a pallet.

For the first month I printed exactly one rack bracket.

Then I printed the dishwasher knob.

Then a phone stand.

Then 8 drawer organizers.

Facilities eventually asked if IT could reproduce a discontinued plastic clip for 60 conference-room chairs.

I printed 63 overnight.

The vendor had quoted $4,800.

Facilities told leadership IT had saved the company thousands through additive manufacturing.

Finance approved another $6,000 for filament.

My dishwasher works perfectly.
