Let me school you—gently
To begin with, “Onam” is the shortened name. It is Thiruvonam—the sacred nakshatra associated with Bhagavān Vishnu.
Kerala’s cherished tradition connects Thiruvonam with Mahābali. And where is Mahābali’s story found?
• Śrīmad Bhāgavata Purāṇa — Skandha 8
• Vāmana Purāṇa
• Matsya Purāṇa
• Kūrma Purāṇa
• Nārada Purāṇa
• Skanda Purāṇa
• Padma Purāṇa
• Brahma Purāṇa
None of these texts says that Mahābali returns specifically to Kerala. But that is perfectly fine—traditions grow around sacred memory, and Kerala’s tradition deserves to be cherished.
What is not fine is pretending that Thiruvonam has nothing to do with Hinduism.
Its name is Hindu.
Its nakshatra is Vishnu’s.
Its central figures come from Hindu scripture.
Its cultural memory is unmistakably Hindu.
Every time someone tells the story of Indian engineering beginning with the IITs / with post-independence industrialization....quietly correct them.
It began, at least once, with a 14 year old apprentice in a Bombay dockyard, lighting his own garden with gas just to show his neighbours what was possible.
Bombay, 1822. A 14-year-old boy walks into a dockyard and quietly starts a century-long chain reaction.
His name was Ardaseer Cursetjee Wadia, born in Bombay in 1808, into a Parsi family that had spent generations as master shipbuilders for the East India Company's Bombay Dockyard.
He had no diploma. No formal science education whatsoever. What he had was raw obsession with machines, and a father willing to let him loose in the yard at age 14.
Steam power was, at the time, the most cutting-edge tech on the planet, the rough equivalent of what a jet engine / an EV powertrain represents today. And a teenage boy in colonial Bombay decided he was going to master it, with nobody to teach him.
By 1831, still in his early 20s, Cursetjee built something nobody in the city had ever seen: the 1st steam engine ever constructed in Bombay, a tiny, 1 hp machine, built purely to demonstrate to his fellow Indians what steam power actually was and how it worked.
Not commissioned. Not funded by the Crown. Just a young man showing his own countrymen the future with his own hands.
2 years later, at 25, he went further. He had a marine steam engine built and shipped from England, then personally fitted it with his own hands, no supervision, into a ship of his own design and construction: the Indus, launched in 1833. It is frequently cited as one of the earliest steam-powered vessels built in Asia.
He was not finished experimenting either.....
In 1834, at 26, he lit his own bungalow and garden in Mazgaon with gas lighting, something Bombay had never witnessed. Crowds gathered. The Governor of Bombay himself came to see it, and was so impressed he presented Cursetjee with a formal Dress of Honour on the spot.
Steam pumps for irrigation, early electro-plating, even 1 of the first sewing machines in the city, Cursetjee kept quietly introducing technologies to Bombay that most of the city had never encountered before, one experiment at a time.
The East India Company noticed.....
In 1839, they sent him to England, officially, to deepen his study of marine steam engineering, an almost unthinkable gesture for the era. While in London, he was introduced to the President of the Royal Society himself, and to other distinguished Fellows. He was even presented to Queen Victoria during that same trip.
And then, on 27 May 1841, it happened: Cursetjee was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, becoming the first from Idian sub-continent in history to receive that honor.
Think about the scale of that....
Britain's most prestigious scientific institution, the same body that had counted Newton among its presidents, formally recognized a self-taught Parsi engineer from a Bombay dockyard decades before a single engineering college existed anywhere in India.
e began attending meetings of the Institution of Civil Engineers in London, presented his own detailed technical work on marine engine design, and was eventually invited by their president to keep contributing.
He returned to India, kept building, eventually taking charge as superintending engineer of the Indus Flotilla Company in Karachi and by most accounts is presumed to be the first Parsi to ever set foot in America, in 1851.
There was no institution training him. No syllabus. No precedent to follow.
Just a teenager in a colonial dockyard who decided he was going to understand steam power completely and ended up, within two decades, standing shoulder to shoulder with the greatest scientific minds in the British Empire, purely on the strength of what he had built with his own hands.

🚨 Big win for Temple Worshippers of Tamil Nadu!
Hon'ble Division Bench of Madras High Court (G.R.Swaminathan & V.Lakshminarayanan, JJ.) delivered a landmark order in my PIL https://t.co/RCFLYJGyA8. 20764/2026 concerning Sri Parthasarathy Swamy Temple, Triplicane —
but this ruling lays down principles for ALL Hindu temples in TN under @tnhrcedept. 🧵
1️⃣ NO MORE @tnhrcedept Executive Officer DOUBLING AS "FIT PERSON" IN TEMPLES AS A ROUTINE POSTING!
The Court held an Executive Officer can act as "Fit Person" only in exceptional circumstances, for a very brief interim duration. Temple administration must vest in the Board of Trustees — not remain permanently with a government official wearing two hats. Such dual-role arrangements "ought to be terminated at the earliest."
2️⃣ EOs HAVE NO SAY IN RELIGIOUS MATTERS —
This is a superb victory for Hindus !
Under the proviso to Sec.45(2), HR&CE Act, the word "only" is significant: an EO's power is confined STRICTLY to temple properties (movable & immovable, incl. income).
"An area even slightly tinged with religious elements is a no-go zone for the Executive Officer" — pujas, Kumbhabishekam dates/timings, customs & traditions cannot be touched by EOs.
3. The Govt's Learned Addl. Advocate General fairly conceded that trustees will be appointed for Sri Parthasarathy Swamy Temple within 6 months.
Government has also called for applications from Hindus to be appointed as Trustees. A positive move by Hon'ble Minister @RameshOffcl
Finally, the Fraudulent set up of @tnhrcedept 's illegally appointed Executive Officer - also serving as the Sole Trustee (Fit Person) of the temple for more than 40 years comes to an END.
A real step towards temples run by Trustees, not bureaucrats — and the State kept out of religious affairs. 🙏
My gratitude to my counsel Advocate Niranjan Rajagopalan @niranjanlaw !

50 protestors were arrested by Delhi Police at Jantar Mantar yesterday late in the evening. Not one BJP, OPPOSITION neta has demanded amnesty.
HOW MANY CJP ACTIVISTS HELD FOR JANTAR MANTAR VIOLENT NEET PROTEST? = 0
HOW MANY PRO-MERIT PROTESTORS DETAINED FOR PEACEFUL PROTEST AGAINST QUOTA AT JANTAR MANTAR? = > 50
How many "freedom of expression activists" demanding the release of "meritorious" protestors? = 0
WHAT'S THE MAIN DEMAND OF ANTI-QUOTA PROTESTORS:
Reservations should go to poor, not castes.
IS MAKING SUCH A DEMAND PEACEFULLY A REASON TO DETAIN/ARREST?
In 1936, a British physician named Harold Himsworth published a paper that changed modern medicine forever: he showed that "diabetes" was not one disease.
Some patients' bodies simply could not produce insulin, what we now call Type 1. Other patients produced insulin fine, but their bodies had stopped responding to it properly, Type 2.
Before Himsworth, doctors worldwide had spent decades treating diabetes as a single condition, often with disastrous results, because the 2 versions need completely different management.
Now open the Suśruta Saṃhitā and the Caraka Saṃhitā texts compiled somewhere between the 6th century BCE and a few centuries CE. Both texts independently describe madhumeha (literally "honey urine," their name for diabetes) as splitting into 2 fundamentally different categories.
The 1st, Sahaja Prameha, they describe as present from birth, linked to beeja dosha, a defect passed down through the parents' "seed."
Sushruta specifically notes it clusters in families with a prior history of the same condition, and its patients tend to be thin (krisha).
The 2nd, Apathyanimittaja Prameha, they describe as acquired later in life, caused by poor diet and sedentary living, occurring in patients who tend to be heavier (sthula).
Read that again slowly.....
An inherited form appearing in thin patients Vs a lifestyle-driven form appearing in heavier patients.
That is, structurally, almost exactly the Type 1 / Type 2 split, genetic and insulin-dependent versus acquired and lifestyle-linked and multiple peer-reviewed medical papers on the history of diabetes now explicitly note the parallel.
They did not have insulin / pancreatic biology / any concept of hormones. They had 2000 years of careful bedside observation, and it got them to a diagnostic distinction the West did not formalize until the 20th century.
