We've created this visionary progressive voter guide to help the community vote for real change in the Town. If you are feeling overwhelmed with the ballot, or unsure of who/ what to vote for, please use, save and share with friends and fam! 🧵
Oakland artists & culture keepers endorse Greg Hodge for Mayor! As the only candidate with an Arts, Culture and Healing platform, let's ensure the Town's arts scene can thrive. Thank you Alice Walker, @msryannicole, @DaveedDiggs, @WEEMSCarrie, @thejennjohns & @michellemushlee!
@elizzo12@cynthiasaysboo @johnajonesIII That does sound way better to me :) Personally I think our policies *should* help drug users intentionally, and the ones taking advantage of this are the other cities saying "go to Oakland" instead of handling their own addiction & housing problems.
@elizzo12@cynthiasaysboo @johnajonesIII You said addicts make it tougher for "actual homeless" to get resources. That distinction blames unhoused people who use drugs, instead of blaming the cities that don't provide help for them. Often drug use is self-medication for untreated mental health issues.
@elizzo12@cynthiasaysboo @johnajonesIII Calling unhoused people good or bad depending on addiction is unhelpful. Addicts and non-addicts both need resources to get to a better place. Simply providing those resources is the cheapest, most effective way to fix the problem. Other cities just want us to do it for them.
@Match_Analysis @CharleyLovatoJr @ShengForOakland I listened as they stopped someone and talked them through getting a ticket. Maybe acting on behalf of Bart police for easy overtime pay.
That aside, thanks for a relatively respectful argument, I learned some things. Constructive common ground: police unions are a major problem.
@Match_Analysis @CharleyLovatoJr @ShengForOakland Also it's not like they've *ever* responded quickly to urgent calls in rough neighborhoods, regardless of staffing. They've never showed up when I needed them since I moved here in 08. I'd rather not give them our money and just hope they start now.
@Match_Analysis @CharleyLovatoJr @ShengForOakland The other day I ran into four SUVs and 12+ officers on overtime at midnight outside the Bart station handing out tickets to people who couldn't afford fare. Was that an urgent call for all of them?
It seems like you're trusting OPD's word on a lot of this.
@Match_Analysis @CharleyLovatoJr @ShengForOakland OPD never wastes time? That is just untrue. Is this based on anything other than what OPD claims? Again, where is the oversight?
@Match_Analysis @CharleyLovatoJr @ShengForOakland But where is the oversight to make this ideal time allocation happen? Talking about how police should, "ideally" spend their time sounds like fantasy. We literally can't even fire them when they shoot down unarmed kids.
@Match_Analysis The link I posted is from 2022 and covers stats through 2021. Looking at the crime data, I'm not seeing any skyrocketing rates after those cuts you mentioned. Why compare to 2018 to show the results of a budget cut in 2020?
@Match_Analysis Also--I legit might be missing something here, but where statistically do you see the rapid rise in crime rate in the past few years?

@Match_Analysis @CharleyLovatoJr @ShengForOakland The original reason to defund the police wa because they are violent, racist, and ineffective for safety. They are more invested in protecting rich people's property than public safety, and that won't change by paying them more.
Always stuff like this:

@NathanBreitling@Match_Analysis @ShengForOakland My point was not about the budget process, but that school closures also affect crime rates. I understand it isn't the same pot of money, but underfunded schools (not just during the pandemic) set up an environment for higher crime. I bring it up because https://t.co/uhZMiZ0paC
@Match_Analysis @ShengForOakland I think police budgets are a red herring; violent crime is up because poverty is up. The solutions to poverty are difficult and expensive. Police budgets just seem like the most bloated part of the city budget to find funds for those solutions.
