@mz__chaz @YikesvilleMayor @Matt______C @activeasian @nikki4oakland Reallocating funds out of police budgets into alternatives as was done in June 2020 is pretty much the definition of defunding.
Support for cutting police staffing comes almost entirely young white folks. BIPOC folks in Oakland generally prefer more cops.
@anm @Elmanogonsalves @doescomputing Certainly interesting. Not sure it’s actionable in any way. I imagine coverage is largely driven by engagement and ad spending.
More eyeballs = more ad revenue. I would guess Nielsen or someone can tell you exactly what flavor of stories retain viewers. And those are the focus.
@anm @Elmanogonsalves @doescomputing If the top issues your city faces (based on every poll in recent history) are constantly front and center in the media, some would say the media is doing exactly what you want it doing. Sweeping problems under the rug isn’t really their job.
That’s what politicians are for. 😉
@anm @Elmanogonsalves @doescomputing Protestors work very hard and stage major events to encourage the media to cover their community’s issues. So, if the media is giving your city more attention and problems are more likely to be addressed, you should be thankful,?right? The media is biased in your city’s favor.
As I have awaited the news on the name of the officer who was murdered this morning, hoping that it wasn't an officer, I knew. Once I received the news, unfortunately, it was an officer who I knew and policed in my neighborhood who personally responded to several of my calls for service.
Earlier this year, Officer Tuan Le came to my home because there were criminals consistently casing my home, hanging out on my property between 3am and 6am. These criminals were stealing things off my front porch and things in yard with swords visibly in their hands walking around my property. Officer Le requested more frequent patrolling in my neighborhood. He would personally drive past my home and look around my property when he could in between answering service calls. There was a time when I left my garage door open, and he personally knocked on my door to let me know that I left it open because he knew that wasn't my norm.
Officer Le was a great cop who cared about the community in Oakland. He was fearless cop. He was always willing to do whatever it took to keep our communities safe. This is heartbreaking and loss for the city of Oakland. I am praying for his family and friends during this difficult time.
@dalegreer@TonyLaneNV@HardbassKiddxy Oakland defunded its police department by $14M in June 2020 and another $15M in Dec 2020. With rapidly increasing crime, they began refunding the cuts in April 2021.
