1/The Invisible Commodity
Most people think helium is a balloon gas. It's actually one of the most critical commodities on the planet — and right now, a third of the world's supply is gone. No one is talking about this.
Helium isn't just for balloons. It never really was. The stuff keeps MRI machines running — those superconducting magnets need to be cooled to -269°C, and helium is the only thing cold enough to do it. Without a steady supply, a $3 million MRI scanner is basically a very expensive metal tube sitting in a hospital basement doing nothing.
It's also what makes your chips possible. Semiconductor fabs use helium for cooling wafers, leak detection, and precision manufacturing. TSMC burns through roughly 500,000 cubic feet of the stuff per year at their most advanced facilities. No helium, no chips. No chips, no AI boom.
And here's one most people miss — every hard drive over 10TB is sealed with helium inside. It's seven times less dense than air, which lets manufacturers squeeze more platters into the same space. Your cloud storage, your Netflix, your AI training data — all sitting on helium-filled drives.
Now, to be fair — helium isn't the single most important input in any of these industries. Chip fabrication depends on dozens of critical materials. An MRI machine is an enormously complex piece of engineering. Hard drives have their own deep supply chains.
But here's what makes helium different from all of those: it's the one input that can't be substituted, and it cuts across every single one of these industries at the same time. Silicon is critical to chips but irrelevant to MRI machines. ASML matters for lithography but not for hard drives. Helium is the common thread tying semiconductors, healthcare, aerospace, quantum computing, and data storage together — and for every one of those applications, there is no plan B. Nothing else on this planet can do what liquid helium does.
