Padre Pio said something that really marveled me the very first time I ever heard of it. I never knew this was a teaching in the Catholic Church.

Padre Pio was at the doctor’s, and while the doctor was examining him, he noticed that Padre Pio was praying.

The doctor asked, "What are you praying for?"

Padre Pio replied, "I’m praying for the conversion and happy death of my grandfather."

The doctor said, "I knew your grandfather. He died 20 years ago."

Padre Pio said, "I know. But God knew 20 years ago that I would be here today, making this prayer for my grandfather."

God, who at the moment of my grandfather’s death already knew that 20 years in the future I would be here making this prayer, can apply the grace of that prayer to him at the moment of his death.

When I heard this, I screamed.

"What? To help him? How's this even possible?"

But God is outside of time and can do whatever He likes.

Now, to be clear: you cannot pray a soul out of Hell. That's not what Padre Pio was saying.

The point is that God, in His eternal foreknowledge, knew that this prayer would be offered. He can apply the grace associated with that prayer back to the moment of that person's death, at the moment of judgment.

Not after the judgment, but at the moment.

God is not limited by time. God can do whatever He wills.

This is compatible with the Catholic teaching.
