How does the age at which a lamb is tail docked affect wound healing? That was the question I brought to the 2026 ASAS annual meeting this week. Good conversations, sharp questions, and a lot of excellent work from colleagues across animal science. #ASAS2026#animalwelfare

Preliminary results indicate lambs docked at birth using a hot iron experience a high prevalence of infection which significantly delays the healing process. These findings raise important welfare concerns and highlight the need for improved docking management and aftercare.
I had the opportunity to present the initial findings from my PhD research in an infographic competition hosted by the Animal & Dairy Sciences Department at UW–Madison. I am especially grateful to my advisor, Dr. Sarah Adcock (pictured), for her ongoing mentorship and support.
