August 1st marks the (unofficial) start of the 2025-2026 #clinicalpsychology Ph.D. application cycle! To kick off application season, I've been collecting my (unofficial!) list of outdated application advice that we still give applicants on this site and elsewhere 🧵 (1/8).
We are still accepting applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Clinical-Forensic Psychology to begin as early as July 15th, 2024.

A big thank you to my twitterless supervisor, Dr. Kevin Douglas, for supporting this project. I'm excited to continue along this line of research in threat assessment for my PhD dissertation - stay tuned!
My MA thesis is finally published! 🎉 I used Amazon's MTurk to recruit a community sample of individuals who made an explicit threat of violence to explore what factors differentiated those who were physically violent from those who were not.

It was concluded that empirically supported SPJ risk ax tools like the HCR-20 may be a good option for assessing explicit threats when the threatener's identity is known - and that more research on the ax of anonymous threats is sorely needed.
Extremely grateful and excited to announce that I have been awarded a @SSHRC_CRSH Doctoral Fellowship to support my dissertation! Looking forward to putting it to good use through continuing my research on targeted violence and best practices in threat assessment. #SSHRC@SFU

This project is particularly special to me as it's my first in the threat assessment area and the first I led from conceptualization to dissemination. A big thank you to my collaborators @ToniaLNicholls@MCSeto@crocker_anne & twitterless Karen Petersen for their invaluable help!
Excited to share my 2nd first-author article, which explored rates and nature of targeted violence in individuals found NCRMD (🇨🇦 NGRI)! We found that ~19% of patients in our sample committed an index offence of targeted violence. https://t.co/qBtiApBA8P
When perpetrators & non-perpetrators of TV were compared, perpetrators were more likely to utter threats/criminal harassment than physical offences, have a dx of a psychotic disorder &/or PD, & display delusions during their offence - but less likely to have a sub use disorder!
Extremely grateful and excited to announce that I have been awarded a @SSHRC_CRSH Doctoral Fellowship to support my dissertation! Looking forward to putting it to good use through continuing my research on targeted violence and best practices in threat assessment. #SSHRC@SFU
#APLS2023 is done! It was wonderful to catch up with old colleagues & present my MA thesis on the predictors of physical harm for perpetrators of violent threats. Thank you to all who came out to the second last session to listen (😴) & slides available upon request! @APLSsc

@Arielle_C_Smith I found it helpful to mention to (supportive) supervisors that grad school was the goal & they were more open to giving me CV-building opportunities. Also try and lead a semi-independent mini project yourself (eg with secondary data) if you can - it shows initiative!
@Arielle_C_Smith I echo what others have said about ensuring there are opportunities for growth! I would strongly encourage grad school hopefuls to take those 1-2 post-bacc years to live a “normal life” with evenings & weekends free - it may be the last time for a while. Take time off & travel!
