Russia will negotiate seriously only once it understands that time is no longer on its side and victory is unattainable.
That moment will not arrive by itself. It must be created — through sustained pressure on Russia, continued support for Ukraine, and European resolve.
At the #LennartMeriConference dinner, I spoke about why Europe should not wait for others to defend our values on our behalf. The brave choice for Europe is to step forward. To assume leadership – in Europe and in the wider world. Europe does possess bravery.
Russia is starting to lose ground in Ukraine
Our tracker suggests it has suffered its first sustained net loss since October 2023

Russia’s government paper: “What went against Orbán was his unprecedentedly long time in office...16 years in a row, 20 in total. The fatigue factor, growing tired of the same people is psychologically understandable.”
A reminder: it’s writing about Hungary.

Today marks the anniversary of the Minsk II agreement. Its unclear sequencing, lack of enforcement, and nonexistent security guarantees masked Russia’s unwillingness to pursue real peace.
The stakes are higher now—and repeating that naïveté would come at an even greater cost.
OTD in 1920 Soviet Russia signed the Treaty of Tartu with Estonia. We promised that Russia “unreservedly recognizes the independence and sovereignty of the State of Estonia forever”.
Further proof you can trust a treaty we would sign with Ukraine.
Quick question for every journalist covering the Ukraine/Berlin talks:
Have you read Section 257 of CAATSA?
It's current US law. Trump signed it himself in 2017. It says the US will NEVER recognize the separation of ANY Ukrainian territory through military force.
Never. That's what it says. Still in effect.
So why is no one asking why the President is demanding Ukraine do exactly what US law says America will never recognize?
This isn't obscure. It passed 419-3 in the House, 98-2 in the Senate.
Do your job.
With the largest oil company in Russia reporting earnings down -79% year-over-year for 3rd quarter 2025, EVEN BEFORE Ukraine’s November blitz of strikes on the Russian oil industry, Putin has very limited time for Trump to save him.
Likely that Rosneft is now a money losing company.
Russian fighter jets were warned as they neared Estonian and @NATO airspace.
Despite the warnings, they crossed the border and remained for 12 minutes.
By doing so, Russia — a permanent member of the @UN Security Council — blatantly and recklessly violated Estonia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the UN Charter and international law.
The map shows the flight path of three Russian MiG-31s that violated Estonian airspace near Vaindloo island on 19 Sept. They remained for nearly 12 minutes with transponders off, no radio contact. NATO Baltic Air Policing F-35s responded. Russia’s 4th airspace violation this year
This war has been an exercise in breaking taboos: heavy weapons, tanks, missiles, de-SWIFTing banks, energy independence.
Now the latest one—using frozen Russian assets—is shaking.
About time.

Whoever writes that "all wars end with negotiations" should be refuted by an decent foreign affairs journal, because it is not true in modern times.

Budget disaster in Russia.
Budget deficit for 7 months was - 4879 billion rubles (60 billion dollars)
This is not just a lot, this is a historical record, both for 7 months and for all previous years of Russia's existence !
