In one region of Indonesia, malaria rates dropped from 16.5% to nearly zero. The fix wasn't pharmaceutical. It was fish.
Farmers there raise fish directly in flooded rice paddies, a practice roughly 2,000 years old. The fish eat mosquito larvae before they mature, which is what crashed the malaria rate. They also eat insect pests and weeds in the rice itself, and their waste fertilizes the crop as they swim through it. The rice gives them shade and cover in return. One field, two harvests, and a public health outcome nobody was trying for.
The numbers hold up under modern scrutiny. Studies have found rice-fish systems use 68 percent less pesticide and 24 percent less fertilizer than conventional rice farming, with equal or higher rice yields. Same land, fewer chemical inputs, plus a second source of protein and income from fish that were already doing the pest control.
The Green Revolution pushed rice farming toward chemical monoculture, and practices like this nearly disappeared in the process. It's coming back because it never stopped working. A flooded field isn't a factory. It's an ecosystem, and apparently it can out-perform a malaria program too.
Switzerland is the only country in the world with enough bunker capacity to shelter its entire population, with roughly 370,000 facilities equipped with air filtration systems, toilets, bunk beds, food and water supplies, and backup power sources.
Switzerland has upheld the principle of “a shelter for every inhabitant” since a 1963 federal law required that all residents have access to a protected space near their home. As of 2026, the country maintains around 370,000 shelters, offering more than 9 million total spaces—enough to cover over 100% of its permanent population. This makes Switzerland unique in having infrastructure capable of housing its entire population in the event of armed conflict or nuclear war.
These shelters are built to standardized specifications, typically featuring reinforced concrete structures, blast doors, and NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) filtration systems to ensure breathable air during emergencies. While the law mandates essentials such as bunk beds, toilets, and water reserves, individuals are generally responsible for supplying food and medical provisions. In peacetime, many of these shelters are repurposed as storage areas, wine cellars, or laundry rooms, though regulations require they can be converted back into fully operational shelters within five days if ordered by the government.
Although Switzerland leads in total coverage, countries like Finland and Sweden also maintain substantial civil defense systems, with Finland capable of sheltering about 85% of its population. As of early 2026, Switzerland has invested roughly $1.2 billion to modernize its network, focusing on upgrading filtration systems and improving large public bunkers to keep the system effective against modern threats.
In 1962, Brendon Grimshaw purchased Moyenne Island in the Seychelles for roughly $11,000. At the time, the small island was completely barren and uninhabited.
Over the following decades, Grimshaw dedicated his life to restoring its ecosystem. He personally planted more than 16,000 trees, created walking trails, and reintroduced endangered species — most notably giant Aldabra tortoises — transforming the once-desolate island into a lush, thriving nature sanctuary.
Despite numerous offers from wealthy developers eager to turn the island into a luxury resort, Grimshaw consistently refused. He famously rejected a $50 million bid, determined to keep Moyenne Island as a protected natural haven open for people to enjoy rather than a private commercial venture.
In 2009, his vision was permanently secured when Moyenne Island was incorporated into the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, becoming the smallest national park in the world.
Grimshaw lived on the island until his death in 2012, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of conservation and environmental stewardship that continues to protect this unique paradise for future generations.
"My battery is low and it's getting dark."
This line captures the essence of Opportunity's last data signal. The rover was meant to explore Mars for just 90 days, yet it kept going for nearly fifteen years.
Opportunity’s final transmission was telemetry data showing low power and reduced light during a dust storm which was interpreted as a gentle farewell:
"My battery is low and it's getting dark."
A graceful parting from a machine that became something deeply meaningful to us.
Until we meet again, dear friend.
Doug Ford pictured today in his garage promising that if the LCBO strikes he’ll jump in his pickup truck and personally deliver all alcohol to everyone across the province and Ottawa too.
Doug Ford has justified closing the Ontario Science Centre based on an engineering report.
After reviewing the report I couldn’t find a single recommendation to close the Centre. Repairs were recommended.
Developers wanted the land and now Ford has given it to them.

Poilievre out paying a personal visit to and riling up protesters camping on the side of the road. He talks about the Great Canadian Tax revolt because he knows the word “taxes” triggers the hell out of them. They’re all programmed. None of them will ever pay capital gains taxes.

Not one of those conservative leaders was asked to speak at Brian Mulroneys' funeral .
Instead, the family picked a liberal prime minister.
Justin Trudeau.
That says a lot.
#ISTANDWITHTRUDEAU
I don’t judge Trudeau when I look at this photo like she’d like us to. I’m appalled. I find myself judging her instead. She probably doesn’t realize that her message got lost on herself. Their irrational hatred is a reflection of themselves. And Pierre Poilievre.
Protesting against the exact same thing Poilievre is offering Canada. If there was ever a country that recognizes fascism and bad players, it’s Germany. Poilievre wouldn’t last 5 minutes in Germany as a politician. We can’t accept his fascist views here either. Listen to Germany.
Pierre Poilievre is targeting liberal ridings in Ontario with disinformation. The Ford gov't is now repeating PP's slogans. Is it time the @liberal_party and MP's start reminding Ontario voters all the fails and damage caused by Doug Ford. @TurnbullWhitby@karinagould
